WHISTLER, British Columbia Simon Ammann became the first gold medalist of the Vancouver Games on Saturday by winning the normal hill ski jump to return to the top of the Olympic podium eight years after his first triumph.
Ammann, 28, put down a majestic second jump of 108 meters to protect his lead from the first round and become just the second ski jumper to earn three individual Olympic golds. He swept both the normal and large hill events at the Salt Lake City Games.
