How likely is it that you will be attacked by a trained martial artist?

I am not asking for speculation or to hear I must prepare for this.

Does anyone here know anyone who has been attacked by someone who demonstrated serious martial skills?

I don't mean street fighting either I mean have come up against a trained karateka, grappler or knife fighter etc???

Just curious.

Cheers

Um, I was, but it was a domestic situation that turned out to be more bark than bite. Quite scary then, however. I was well aware of the skill level of the person.

Outside of a domestic situation (yeah, yeah but from the people I've talked to, I think I'm right on this), I don't think it is as common as some would like to think.

There used to be a well train martial artist in my area who like to bar fight. His instructor actually encouraged him. Sad but true.
I have been challenged before while practicing in the park by trained people ( while living in So. Ca. ) and it was not a really friendly challenge but we talked about it and for reasons not discussed hear decided not to fight.

I have not been , and I also think that the chances are low. I think most of us in the Martial Arts community have the morality to not gonig around picking fights or bullying others.

That would be the hope of most of us I think. There was once a school in NYC that had many students “clean “ the street of the local punks by doing a walk through of the streets around the school each nigh. They called it field testing

I have been faced with lots of people that THOUGHT they had training, or wanted me to think they had, but in reality? nope, never.

Going back to what someone said earlier, martial artists going out and field testing thier training is pretty rare today, but here in texas, some of the most famous karateka of the 60's and 70's did that very thing.

Without naming names in public (PM me if you want details) they would go out and pick fights, and see just how tough they were. One guy in particular would challenge 3-5 guys in the bar, one after another, they would go outside, he would kick the snot out of them and go back in and keep drinking.

One world famous texas martial artist was on the local LEO's watch list for YEARS because he busted so many people up.

Yea you have to define 'trained martial artist'.

I've seen many a fight on youtube and others, never seen any serious martil artest except the one who ***** slapped the pimp on the street (and the pimp deserved it.)

I say unless you go around picking fights at the local martial arts studios or MMA workout centers, you won't meet any serious 'trained martial artist'.

I know someone who was attacked by a guy with marine combatives training. The marine was drunk though... :idunno:
Well, if you want to go there.... ;) I've known hundreds of sailors and marines who got into it when both were three sheets to the wind. Any marital arts involved? Probably none we could recognize. Alcohol + Youth + Liberty Call = blow off lotsa steam. :D

OK, before this derails the thread, back to: How likely is it that you will be attacked by a trained martial artist?

Well that all depends I guess on whether or not you Dis Chuck Norris :D

Is it likely, I have no idea really, but I would learn towards no.

But then if attacked I don't plan on asking and I hope I don't give them enough time for me to find out.

I've been attacked by guys who *said* they were martial artists, you know, in that chest-puffing stage when they're working up the nerve to actually *do* something.
One guy told me he had 5 whole years in kickboxing and he was going to kick me in the head before I could move. His game must've been off, though. I escorted him out of the bar (and those damn walls and tables kept jumping out in front of us) and never got to see his m4d sk1llz...

Sounds like the drunken guy I and 4 police escorted out of an Emergency room who was a self acclaimed Martial arts "Grandmaster"…. at age 22

"Anyone that attacks you is a punk. They will be shocked that you are fighting back. Nobody trained would go around attacking people, they know better".

What? Mere cuffs stopped a GrandMaster? Maybe if he'd been a more seasoned GM? ;)

Drunken Boxing?
The likelihood of THAT happening is in direct proportion to your proximity of the local bar on a friday night near closing time.

Being attacked by a trained martial artist (by any definition) is probably the same as being attacked by someone who isn't trained.
Thing is how well are YOU trained to deal with it??
