We used to do this with revolvers by having a partner load the weapon with some chambers empty. This reduces flinch reflex and bucking. Very noticeable when you drop the hammer on an empty chamber that you thought was loaded.

That is how I learned, load 3 or four into the cylinder as a training tool to determine flinches or movements when anticipating the shot. I do the same thing with dummy rounds in my autos.
