Push up is one of the best exercises to strengthen a woman's chest. A basic push up is usually begin with a plank position. You may read the guidelines for other women to know how it is done correctly at the Women's Health Magazine.

I agree with this. Women's should prefer pushups through knees rather than toes.

The only reason women are encouraged to do them from the knees is because they are easier, and it was always assumed in the old days that women were too weak to do real pushups.

Nowadays we know that isn't always the case.

Actually a lot of reputable physical training instructors agree that it's fine for women to do them from the knees, especially bigger breasted women and women who have incontinence problems form childbirth or older age. These are issues that are rarely taken into consideration by martial arts instructors, it simply doesn't occur to them ( no reason why it should to be honest incontinence or 'sensitive bladder' as it's often coyly called, is a hidden problem)

perhaps many people might think that women doing push ups from their knees is sexist and condescending toward women. as if women CANT do them as well as men. that old style thinking that women cant drive, or ride a horse, women shouldnt read.....after all the women's body should be soft and sensual, we wouldnt want those manly push ups to reduce their breast size, and who would want a women with muscles !!!!!

Personally, I don't think it's a completely useless thread. I could talk about push-ups all day.

Which, of course, is a whole lot easier than doing push-ups all day. :)

Why are people so 'concerned' about how a woman does a press up? A great many people do things they've adapted so they can do them, why the noise about how women do press ups?
Press ups done on the knees are better than no press ups.

I can only speak for myself but that is my point. I do not think anyone cares how ANYONE does it. The goal is not to do a push up, the goal is to be better than you were yesterday. I don't care what that entails.

Weaker students (male or female) should do them from their knees until they can do them from their toes.

Or carry on doing them on their knees if that's the only way they will ever be able to do them.

Agreed. My point was that it's not a gender thing. If someone is too weak to do them from toes (or unstable, or for other reasons cannot) they should do them from knees.

And other than the other variations of push ups we've done, it's front two knuckles, front two knuckles, front two knuckles.

To me and mine, push ups are an exercise in discipline, and....front two knuckles, front two knuckles, front two knuckles. And no, not for kids who have not fully developed yet, growth plates and all. But other than that...front two knuckles, front two knuckles, front two knuckles. :)

Hahaha yeah we had that drilled into us too in the dojo, on the good ol wooden floors ;).

Although the last little while because of health issues I've had to mainly do pushups from the knees again, it has been delightful :D
