Anyone here learn HEMMA ? Compare to Japanese Kendo , German Longsword fencing teaches the use of sword grappling such as lock , throw and takedown . Not only do they teach the use of longsword , they teaches sword and shield , rapier , buckler and axe .

Compare to Japanese Kendo

You can compare kendo to modern fencing.

But historical arts have a lot more in them. For Japan that would be called koryu kenjutsu. And it is almost totally different from Kendo. Kenjutsu has a lot of what you mentioned like locking and taking someone down.

There is an entire section here devoted to European sword arts. Why don't you take some time to read up and get a feel for the area before you jump in and ask questions that may have already been answered?
