Other then the driving, the event was great. All major highways in and around Detroit were closed, or very limited. Then, the main North/south road to get to the club was closed at the intersection just north of the school. This forced a few people to show up late. Also, afterwards; some of us went to Dinner, and the directions we were given (by a fellow martial talker) was incorrect. But we made it, had a great time and raised some money!
The charity event was a good success. We had 20 active people training about the whole time. Some got there late, some early. Some have never held a cane prior to this day. THere was 3 modern arnis orginizations represented and independants as well. Both instructors had about 90 minutes to teach, and they kept everyone working, and switching partners to ensure everyone was intermingled with different clubs/styles/orgs.
We raised close to $900 for Marissa Marks, who was unable to attend as she had an episode of seizures the night before. Her father was in attendance, and one of the people with no experience with the cane. At the end of the event, he presented Datu Hartman and Guru Parsons with 16x20 hand painted caligraphy, of the book of Confusius. Each with a different quote. A very classy end to the training session/fund raiser.
