Just going by the websites -- Pugarita Karate seems rather commercial. The Shotokan club seems to be a more traditional environment. I'm not personally familiar with either of them, though. Have you visited either?

I will visit them both in the upcoming weeks. Was just really wondering if a dojo (like Pugarita) which focuses on tournaments ends up focusing on tournament specific training to the detriment of a complete curriculum, or whether that is just rampant paranoia on my part... :)

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm looking for, but Polander is out for me. Hard to find Japanese arts in the area :/

Is Polander in Bethesda, MD too far for you? I used to train there in Japanese Jujutsu. The instructor, David Taylor, is a nice guy. And he only charges $75/month w/no contract. I'm currently paying $150/mo. w/1 year contract for MMA. Even a Wu Shu school that I checked out wanted $160/mo. w/2 year contract, ouch.

Maybe some of these places are close enough?

http://www.academyofmartialarts.net/adults.aspx it looks like they practice a traditional japanese art, but I can't find what style by browsing their site.
He's Jinenkan budo taijutsu. Jinenkan is descended from Bujinkan and is headed by Manaka Sensei. http://www.jinenkan.com/

The kids and junior classes are based in Isshin Ryu (according to one of the instructors).

I've trained there just to check it out a couple of years ago. What I saw of it (one month and eight classes) I generally liked. Good group of people, friendly staff, and a decent facility. I will say that when I went in, I was a little concerned with the 'we are a blackbelt school banner' but after watching the kids and teens classes, I have to say I think the program is pretty solid.

The adult classes are pretty demanding. The techniques were all taught in a paired kata format and I didn't notice any radically weird techniques. No chi balls or dubious material.

You can edit a post for a minute or two (not sure of the exact limit) immediately after posting. After that it’s permanent.
