The symbols on the rights hand side of the page - can anyone tell me what origin (chinese??) they come from? The are supposed to translate into "Never give up" or "perseverance"...unable to verify.

Ultimately they will be of Chinese origin. They could be kanji from Japan or hanja from Korea (more likely given the school), but as the kanji and hanja are just Chinese characters...

It says just that. Is it Chinese in origin the characters are however maybe the saying is not. Remember for a character a Japanese and Chinese may read the character such as Heaven as Chinese=Tian and Japanese=Ten
