I would say your timing is right. Punching before the foot lands, utilizes your body weight behind the punch.
With Kenpo, sometimes the form is the problem.
It's your stance.
I think moving in form is important, but not a particular form. It is a lot more interesting than standing there kicking over, and over, and it is...

It is the same idea, but you flick out your foot, and precede the landing with the lunge punch.
You can forge a new path.
It more of a grind up to it, if you have been moving differently, your whole life, but it should just be like walking down the road.

I would say that is true of the canteen, and possibly the stirrup, but, I think they mostly met, fought, and stole each other's ideas.
