Thumbs up I Love to roughhouse with the females.....

You know ...... sneak attadks - tackles at odd times..... push them around a little extra.... to condition them to what could happen on the street and not be so gun shy.

Agree ......... Disagree

Hang on a second .... after thinking this over, I realized I do this to my husband all the time and he is none the worse for wear.

Now I can explain to him that I am conditioning him for what could happen on the street, and that now he will not be so gun shy.

I think sneak attacks would be great for Women AND Men.

I've always thought that surprise grabs and attacks should be part of training. Someone grabs you from behind. "WHAT DO YOU DO"??? It is one thing to learn a technique over and over again. But can you POP it off when suddenly confronted by an attack?

Of course there is always a danger that the "attacker" could get him or herself injured in such practise, but some rules should apply. ie be prepared for an attack while in the school BUT remember where you are, and try not to kill the person.

dot

P.S. sneak attacks in the home can provide a whole other kind of workout!!! Training can have it's "pleasurable" side too.
*sigh* I miss sneak attacks.

I use sneak attacks all the time. I'll wlak up behind one of the girls, grab her pony tail and drag her all over the place. She finally started responding. Don't get me wrong, I do this to every one, not just the women. A good example was last week I was sparring Stick Dummy and we decided to attack the two women sparring next to us. The one he attacked defended herself and the one I attacked never saw me comming. She "screamed like a girl" (her words, not mine) then she counter attacked. We all had a good laugh, but it proves a point.

I think that the students should generally be aware of the possibility and then it would be pretty cool. We don't do this at my school but we do run the "Circle Drill" on occasion and I did quite well at it last time, but it is not the same thing.

We used to do "Dark Alley" at my old school, where we'd kill the lights and run a gauntlet. It was useful, but the circle drill is superior in my opinion.

I think Mr. Sullivan/the IKC calls it the Circle of Humiliation in some of their ads. Basically, you have students surround you in a Semi-Circle. The instructor is behind you. He points at students in the semi-circle and they attack with whatever they like. After you get going, he usually escalates to having you attacked while you are tied up with someone else. It is fun but you have the advantage of knowing you are going to be attacked, but from an unknown angle.

This also relates a bit to Jeff Cooper's mental alert states. I don't have them with me, but they discuss you being either "Unprepared for any attack (like at home watching TV with friends), Aware that an attack may occur (like you are walking alone downtown and it is getting dark), or Being attacked." There may also be another where there is an attack or danger going on and you are trying to avoid it. But he says that if you are attacked with deadly force when unaware, you are dead, so don't be there. Always be alert to possibilities. So in the studio, I'm not expecting anyone to jump me. I'm expecting to be working on what we are working on.

It sounds like some of you may also be fans of the Pink Panther series. One or two of those movies had a cool Ninja Master or Inernational Assasin in them.

Hmm ... sneak attacks .. might even be a good way to convince
my wife to train. Like on the episode of F*R*I*E*N*D*S* when
Ross would jump out of a hiding place and shout DANGER!!!! to scare the bejesus out of the girls!

My Aikido Sensei (and occasionally one or 2 of the other guys) will try a sneak attack on me. One reason he does it is to break my habbit of flinching. Another reason is I think he gets a kick out of seeing my expressions and hearing me scream. I don't mind it. One of the other guys in my dojo did grab my pony tail once and after about a whole minute of "EEEEK !!!!", I finally managed to do Sankyo on him.
