stances

and the mechanics of alignment and balance., and also breathing. Then there is moving without loosing them and how to regain them when you do and then there is relaxation. so, i guess everything that makes a technique work and we practice them witht he techniques in varous situations amping things up slowly to progressively develop consistency in the basics

Basics are the "roots" of any given system, its the building blocks that one needs to know and master as he/she continues to learn the combos (forms/kata/techniques) of the basics and applies them to various situations.

For example here is a short list of some basics:

Stances
Blocking/trapping/checking
Strikes
Kicks
transitions
breathing
concepts/principles
pressure points
conditioning
experience

all of which are used in different combos to fulfill the rest of the given martial arts curriculum and style.
