I was in karate (started 18 years ago) but stopped for a stint to have 4 kids. Now I'm through with 4 and don't plan to have any more kids. I have recently returned back into karate. My two oldest kids (sons) are into karate too. I still have my old sparring gear (for hands/feet plus shin/arm padding).

What I am looking for is to find good chest protection. I understand the design of these has improved a lot since I last sparred in tournaments years ago.

Any suggestions on chest protection gear that is not too bulky/too hot, hopefully comfortable, and allow for flexibility? Thank you for any input.

awma sells a few types of them but don't get the big tkd style one get the small foam ones.

But I personaly hate them to big to hot targets and false idea to thinks kicks don't hurt

I agree with adam, no matter which one you get, it's going to be hot. It's still a good idea, but remember, the sparring gear is intended for incidental contact and will not really temper a full power blow, so don't get lulled into a false sense of security.

Make yourself an iron vest. Available through proper training and excercise. Don't rely on something you won't have when you need it.

Cheers,

Oh, I'm well aware that no sparring gear will stop a full-powered blow. I also know its possible to still get hurt even with gear on.

That said, after some research on the internet, this product in the middle (QP Maxi Guard) looks viable. It supposedly offers protection for the chest, sternum and ribs.

What it boils down to is my main question: Do you know of females that have worn this and how sturdy is it in sparring? ''

I'm an avid fan of protection during sparring.. but as far as chest or groin protection.. I don't use it.. course I'm built like a tank :)
I wear elbow, forearm, hand, shin and foot gear.. with my full shield face mask and that's it.. which is more than enough :)
I have found getting popped in the chest doesn't hurt.. nor do groin shots.. (darn those white belts without control *G*)

we do have a chest protector for females who want to wear one.. but I've yet to see anyone put it on for sparring :)

Hope you find what you are looking for~!

Tess,
Ah, 18 years ago, all I had for sparring in tournaments were protection for hands and feet, shin pads, and a mouthguard, of course. I didn't wear chest protection, groin guard, or headgear.

Obviously, I survived just fine as I brought four beautiful kids to this world!!

I love sparring and would jump at the chance to do so. There is something satisfying about sparring.

A lot of females seem to hate sparring, at least those in my dojo.

I wasn't sure if things changed since then with technology in gear design or if tournaments have made any changes in their protection requirements. That's why I asked....

Ceicei, Well I'm glad you are all up for sparring.. at our school the girls get out there with the guys and bring it on *G*
As far as most tournaments go.. Hand, foot, shin, head and mouth guards are mandatory.. we're going to the Internationals next week and I was surprised to see an amendment to the requirements.. a few months ago it said Female groin protection was mandatory.. then last week it said Optional.. but no chest guards needed at all.. so each tournie will have pretty much their own set of guidelines :)

Ouch! How hard of a kick was that? In class or competition? Pardon me for asking, but your profile didnt say if you were male or female?

I hope you're feeling better, or at least have recovered fully from that kick.
