As of yesterday, I am the instructor for the Friday night classes for my school! I've already taught them 2 out of the last 3 Fridays, but my head instructor surprised me last night by having me sign the paperwork to take over officially! Although the timing is a bit awkward (I will not be able to attend the Friday night advanced belt class, and I test for black in August), I'm really happy--I've wanted this class for a long time.

I guess congrats, but I do not understand how a advance belt runs a class by themself or I am missing something? I am not trying to second guess your abilities but my insureance for my school requires only B.B.'s to run classes and must be on the floor even if a advance is teaching. I know you have the ability and drive so once again congrats and I know you will be a great instructor for them.

I suppose different insurance requires different things. <shrug> Ours requires a criminal background check and CPR certification, but does not specify belt level.

Congratulations Stac3y, as was already stated, teaching is also a great learning experience. You will solidify your own knowledge, and learn much while teaching others. Good for you.http://www.martialtalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Thanks, all! An update: This week starts my second session (we teach 4 sessions a year) as instructor. All of my students last session passed their rank tests with flying colors, and they all did well at the school tournament. A student who visited last week is joining the class and bringing her younger siblings with her--yay! My sons are showing great responsibility by helping me set up for class without my even asking. I'm really loving teaching. :)

Congrats Stacy,
Teaching is a real blessing and honor, I have learned more in the last 8 years of instructing than during any of my other years of Martial Arts training. It reminds me of being a parent (I dont have kids...yet) the relationship is similar andyet different. If there is anything I can do to help let me know, if you need somone to run ideas by, somone you can vent to I will be around.

Another update: I'm halfway through my second session as head instructor, and my class has more than doubled in size from last session! I think maybe they like me. :boing2:

Congratulations!
You wrote that you "signed papers." Does that mean you are getting paid as an employee?
Also, out of curiosity, what rank are you? (I am being nosy)

I am First Brown, which is our highest rank under Black. We only test once a year for Black, so I've been First Brown for almost a year. I will test for Black next month.
We have to sign papers affirming that we are CPR certified, and giving permission for a criminal background check.

I think all instructors (Black Belt or not) should be CPR/First Aid certified and have a background check *especially if working with children*
