View Full Version : Midwest Seminar/ Get together

There has been some talk of different people getting together to meet and exchange idea's and martial arts. Several people from the midwest have started talking about it. Was wondering if it is all talk or are there some interested parties out there. This events doesn't have to take place here in Effingham, IL. But it does have 2 interstate highways running through it. Around 50 hotels/motels and all the fast food type resturants that you can think of. Besides that we are:
2hrs from Indy
2hrs from St.Louis
3 hrs from Chicago
3 hrs from Louisville, KY
Let me know what you think and what dates would work for you.

At this point, for me to be able to attend, it would have to be mid or late October if you want to do it this year. My schedule is packed.

Well, I teach Kali, Silat, Shen Chuan, and Kun Tao Silat. I could either wait to see what other people are teaching, then go for something a little off the beaten path. Or I could spend a little time on each. Or I could take suggestions. Or someone could just come up and attack me and we'll see what comes out ;)

I would be willing to come down or travel a few hours in the car for a nice seminar.
Dates that are Bad.
October 17th - 19th and November 1 & 2 I will be involved with other camps.
July 10-14th I will be involved with yet another MA Event.
I might be ging camping in Canada the North Side of Huron Lake in Late August (* Think week before Labor Day *) so, other dates would be eaiser to get too.
I teach and practice Modern Arnis and Balintawak. Both Filipino Martial Arts.

I'm definitely into something like this unfortunately funds are thinking different. Just to get some perspective I put Effingham into Map Quest and from here in CT it says 15 and 1/2 hrs to drive. I'd do it but like I said the funds disagree right now.

I was planing emailing everyone. I didn't want to offen anyone by having a public seminar. By no means am I trying to make money at it. If it is open to the public. What ever we charge would be split with who ever taught? Does that sound fair or am I off my rocker? I would like my students get some exposer to some of the stick arts

Yup. That's perfectly fair. What I'd recommend would be to get the money, take out the amount of the venue (whatever it costs to rent the training space, if renting is necessary), then divvy up the remaining money (if any) between the organizer and the instructors who teach. Personally, I'll go into it with the attitude that it's volunteer work. I'd even be willing to pay the standard entrance fee (to cover the time that I will be training instead of teaching). That way, if there's any money coming my way, I'll be pleasantly surprised :)

Depending on the attendance sizes and weather conditions, was planning on either at my school, or local park. Other possiblities could be local gymnastic school or park district building. The first two options would be free, the last two would have to pay for rent space. Would also have more space.
Was also thinking about Friday and or Saturday cookout? At lease for the members of Martial Talk.

Yup. I think a cookout thing should only be for MT members and invitees. I think it's a good idea. It would give us MT folks a chance to meet each other and play (if we're so inclined) in a more relaxed atmosphere.
I would also recommend that the price you set be dependent on the venue. If you're not paying anything to rent the space, then you can afford to charge less. If you need to rent space, though, then take the rent into consideration. We want the worst case scenario to be a break even for the host. And, of course, anything better than the worst case scenario means that there's some money made along the way.

I am trying to keep the cost down at least for the Martial Talk Folks. My have two prices for the seminar. One price for Martial Talk People and maybe instructors who bring several students. The other for the average joe who shows up. in either class money made will be split.
Side note you don't have to be from the midwest to attend. Heck if a couple of you can fly into Indy or St.Louis I could probably pick you up. I really don't want to go to Chicago it is little farther.

Oops! I just noticed that I'm an idiot (it happens occasionally and, being an idiot, I can't ever seem to remember it). Oct. 3-5 is out for me, too. I'll be teaching/training at a seminar down in Texas that weekend.
Of the remaining weekends, I'd personally prefer Oct. 24 - 26 because the other weekends fall between two other busy weekends for me. But if either of the other 2 dates work better for others, then that's fine. I'll just be busy for 3 weekends in a row (nothing new there ;) )

I don't care about the money. We'll make sure the up-front out-of-pocket costs are covered first. I'd also like to see the MartialTalk site get a cut!
Advertising in Black Belt can get expensive but a basic listing might have some value. I don't know what the price is? Flyers would be necessary. I know we can get the word out to Bloomington, Terre Haute, and Indianapolis in Indiana by sending them to the appropriate people. At UIUC there's a group. Where else?
I'd be happy to teach some Modern Arnis or just participate.

I teach Modern Arnis - A Filipino Martial Art. It uses a Single Rattan Cane and has aspects that include the double stick and knife work as well as Empty hand techniques.
If I had a choice, I would work on, or instruct with the single cane. No experience required, yet if you have it, fine tuning and subtitles will be discussed.

I also plan to attend. If you can fit me into a slot to teach that would be great, and if not, I will enjoy the opportunity to learn from you all. I teach a combination of karate and jujutsu (karate blocks, kicks and strikes coupled in combinations that include a variety of locks, chokes and throws.)
I too would like a place to crash. The floor is great, I have some foam mats that work great. After a day's drive/workout, and a good day of working out, the surface I sleep on makes no difference.

Thanks for the great work so far! I think that Sunday has the risk of being a travel issue for some--not me as I'm in Terre Haute but for others.

For any and all people who wish to instruct in the first Martial Talk Seminar. Your Deadline is July 10 after that I do not plan on taken any more people on for instructors. I am trying on getting a outline of how the event will be ran. Every day someone else is wanting to help teach. For the event to run smoothly and for all the instructors to get some time on the floor I must have a deadline. We are planning on a two day event with 7 different instructors right now and have 11 hours to fill. That is about an hour or so for each teacher. There will be some after hours get toether to run ideas, techniques, theories by each other on Friday and Saturday Night. For those interested in instructing please email/PM me ASAP.
Thanks to all hope this is one of the best events of the year!

If you end up with a boatload of instructors, you could have 2 instructors teach simultaneously (at two different "stations" - if you've got the room to set 2 training areas up) and have each instructor teach 2 hours, then lay out the schedule so that people can see each instructor at least once. I've seen a couple of others run this way and it seems to work OK.
So, for instance, with 6 instructors (a, b, c, d, e, f):
a & b teach the 1st hour
c & d teach 2nd hour
e & f teach 3rd hour
a & c teach the 4th hour
b & f teach the 5th hour
d & e teach the 6th hour
Just something to consider if you end up with too many instructors.

I can back out in deference to my instructor Tim Hartman if this becomes a problem.

Some of the best seminars I have been to are where you have a choice, so Pesilat's idea is really appealing, floor space permitting. And regarding adequate floor space, I have an old grainy video of Ueshiba teaching Aikido in a tiny room packed with students like sardines. Small spaces can work out just fine.
One thing that really makes this work is to have an initial session where each instructor demos their ideas up front, quickly (5 minutes per instructor), and then the students have some idea of what they will be learning. For this to work well, I recommend all students getting a paper schedule right up front, so they can record what they like, and then take some time to plan which they would attend when.
I have three issues that should be considered. First, there are some who want to do some takedowns, and mats would be helpful. So you might want to consider the logistics of this as well (mats vs. wood floor).
Second, it might be wise to take a poll of what out-of-town visitors can attend on Sunday. Unfortunately I can't since I have to travel nearly 24 hours each way on a Greyhound, so I am limited to Saturday only.
Finally, for those considering weapons, please make sure you bring enough for us novices. Thanks.

I'd prefer not to see it go to two instructors at a time. For one thing, recall that the event is in a rural area--attendance may not be high enough to justify it.

I have several options we can choose. People who can't make it on Sunday will teach on Saturday. If we have a butt load of instructors I will bow out myself. I may have too many irons in the fire already. Would like to be able to show case some of my stuff.
Option 1 has already been mention. Have 2 instructors teach at the same time. Have a rotating schedual.
Option 2 Instructors divided by # of hours we have= time per instructors
Option 3 Pick a drill, technique, or self defense and get different ideas from each instructor.
I will know more after thursday when the deadline is past for the instructors to sign up.

This usually is the case.
If someone had some Rattan or training knives to seel I am sure they could bring them and them the students could use these.
Just what I have seen previously. :D

What is common between these two posts?
Jerome Barber is teaching at both.
I find it poor taste that the good Ed D. can have people post for him here on MT, and yet he cannot contact the seminar host, nor anyone here about this event and or his other engagements.
Very poor taste in my mind.
