I found this on my other stomping ground. At first it sounded silly, but looking into it a bit more, it could actually work, if done as a grassroots kind of thing:
Hello! (Mods: I'm making this horsey! I sent this into our local paper after I just got a call from yet another tack store going out of business. I have added tack below to make this thread horsey but I wanted to pass this along to you all as well.)
In regards to the economy. I have an idea that would jump start the economy NOW and we could do it ourselves. We wouldn't have to wait for the government.
I think on a certain date, if everyone in this country with a full time/secure job spent $10 dollars on something frivolous (such as tack or feed), we'd more than jump start this economy and we'd do it ourselves. What would that say to the world? That we can take matters into our own hands and take care of this mess ourselves!
I know many friends who are in this full time/secure job situation but are economizing..."because everyone else is". This country is in the doldrums and this $10 would be an instant jump to at least get us through until the stimulus kicks in...
$10 dollars is not a lot of money for someone who is secure to pitch in on one day. The US population is 303,824,640. Say 1/3 of those are in a financial situation to spend that $10. Imagine if 100,000,000 people each spent $10 on a certain day? That's $1,000,000,000 put back into American business. Maybe even spend the $10 a small locally owned tack store and feed store.
This is where the power of many will make more of an effect than the government would. It certainly beats putting huge amounts of money into the coffers of huge companies who then pay huge bonuses.

Personally I am considering to visit my local thrift store. I get a lot for 10 bucks there and send my money over where it is desperately needed...2 birds with one stone....
