I received an email from the publisher of the Journal of Asian Martial Arts that said the journal will no longer be available in stores. See part of the email below:

"The decision was made: the Journal of Asian Martial Arts will only be available
by subscription.

Subscriptions in Printed and Digital Formats
Although it will no longer be available in stores, the journal will continue to be
available in print as well as a new digital format. Details will be provided on our
website.

Many of you are subscribers and we thank you for your continued support.
Please let others know the journal is now a subscription-based periodical no
longer available in the stores. Printed copies will be available in limited numbers,
so whoever wants a hard copy of the next issue, or the dwindling back issues,
should order soon. Click here (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001yVc1mfIf8l_lwaEz7d6L8yF_qTLAgwlAPcZbhe 6EeNehRsSnASQCeB98RSKVCiDwCmgDz6I1xdOV7agxC6mmvtjq yN3EQvdEBmuBjR680QGyJ56UNjkZmxidBOZlGRVXXZp8sFxqrC 8=) to order.

Thanks much for your time and help,

Michael DeMarco, Publisher"

I'm sorry to hear this but sadly not surprised. It's one of the very best of the bunch--I regret that now the usual fluff will be all would-be martial artists can find on their bookstore's shelves.

Well that's a shame. I actually had difficulty finding the last issue on the stands so I suppose I have to get a subscription.

Unfortunate. We're down to mostly mma mags on the local shelves.

Yup, time to subscribe.

We need to support publications like this. The print journal medium, which still has many advantages over its electronic competitors, is in desperate shape as a result of the production costs that hard copy presentations of information inevitably entail. A single issue of JAMA or Classical Fighting Arts contains more battle-tested research on MA history and technique than a decade's worth of e.g., Black Belt or the increasingly fluff-laden Taekwondo Times, which have become nothing more than delivery vehicles for advertising (of the most dubious kind), and whose editorial content in increasingly tied to that advertising, so that the only things that get covered in their articles are things which are connected to a major advertiser.

It's not the MAs alone that this is happening with, most certainly—print media are fighting for their lives down the line. I would hate to see high quality, refereed publications in any domain of activity go under, and I'll gladly pay to help keep ones in my areas of interest afloat...

I had thought there was a steadily decreasing variety of MA magazines available at our local Borders ans Barnes+Noble...figured it was just my imagination or others were getting them before me. Now I wonder....

Not sure how going to sub only can save them, though. They'll be losing the business of new customers who discover them on the bookshelf and get hooked.

I guess it comes down to limited print runs and savings on distribution. They mail direct, rather than having to ship stuff to stores where it may not sell because people now have all this free online choice. Of course, the old saying 'you get what you pay for' has a way of being true, where information is concerned....

Ditto here--MMA mags. and Black Belt are the only ones I can find reliably; often I can find Inside Kung Fu and occasionally the Tai Chi magazine (Tai Chi Quarterly?).

As a FMAer I will also check out the knife mags. like Blade but they focus much, much more on the knives themselves than techniques and fighting arts. They're more for smiths and collectors than martial artists.

Tai Chi offically goes to quarterly publication with the next issue. Seems the martial arts magazines are really taking a hit with the current economy.

Well, I went on to subscribe since the new issue of the journal is due out and found that JAMA's website is went down. Hopefully they'll be back online soon. Any subscribers receive the new issue yet?

Thanks. The site's still down, guess I'll try to call them tomorrow.

I have had a subscription for many years (the only MA Mag I subscribe to actually) and I am sorry to see this happening since it likely means I won’t read it much now. I don’t really do well with very long articles on the web I have to print them to read them. This move may just loose them some subscribers actually.

The journal is still the same though correct? Did the page count go down so that some articles are only online?
