While pregnant, I learned some basic HTML and created my first website for my club (Uechi-Ryu). It's still a work in progress, but please check it out...constructive comments are ALWAYS welcome!

The first page looks a little busy for my taste. I also would try to brighten it up some with some color. All in all nice work better than I could do.
Looks good to me!
Shana, do you live in Richmond?

It looks pretty good for your first web site. Personally, I like basic. To be honest, I when I saw the topic "my first website!" I was afraid I was going to see animated GIFs, with that flashing and rotating, a midi file beeping out a tune and the cursor doing goofy things by dragging little images behind it. Instead, I found a nice pleasant site that was easy on the eyes.
To give it a more professional edge I think a menu interface to replace the links at the top that may be overwhelming to some visitors. If you could divide those links into five or so categories, then when someone mouses over the category it could drop down the various links from which to select.

I work in Richmond, but live out in the country a bit. I'm about 1/2 way between Richmond & Charlottesville. Nicer scenery & still reasonable o get to stuff. Why do you ask? I thought you hailed from England?

Thank you all for the comments!
Crushing, I didn't want to go
"obnoxious" for my 1st pg. Thanks for noticing, and I like your idea on the menu....I'll just have to figure out how to do that.
Terry, my sensei asked for a simple site, so that's why the limited colours, but I'll look into neating up the landing page....thanks!
Happy Holidays, all, whatever you celebrate!

Let me add, here is an example of what NOT to do http://www.vfwmi.org/. If I didn't have to use this website as part of my work for my local VFW post, I wouldn't. It drives me absolutely crazy the Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars couldn't do something better than this. I've met the guy that put it together and he is extremely proud of the website. Fortunately, it is VFW posts and their respective officers that are the 'customers' being served by the website and not necessarily people looking to become members.
The national VFW website is much better http://www.vfw.org. I hope the website I put together for my post is adequate http://www.vfw3256.org.

both of these sites have nice clean lines and are easy to navigate...as for that other site....:barf:
no offense, but I agree it needs a lot of work
Checked out the programming on your site, and I think it gives me ideas on how to modify mine...when I have some spare time (new baby? yeah..right) Thanks Crushing!

Richmond, VA has lovely scenery and some cool things if you know where to look..but I don't think we can compete with some of the lushness shown on that webpage...siigh! Of course, I love old buildings and old growth, so maybe it's just a personal reaction.
Thanks for sharing the parallelism!
