View Full Version : Very Early
CuongNhuka 08-06-2008, 01:23 PM Well, if you have read the "Lance Corporal, it hurts to breath" thread, things just got fun. Orginally, I was slated to go to Basic training 6 October. I just got a call from one of the recruiters, I'll be going to Basic on Monday. So, I'm only about two months earlyhttp://martialtalk.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif
Wish me luck!
Xue Sheng 08-06-2008, 01:26 PM Good luck

Kacey 08-06-2008, 01:33 PM Good luck... and go see a doctor now - so that if you really do have exercise-induced asthma, or some other problem, you will know it when you go in and can get treatment, instead of washing out of Basic, or having to start over after the problem is diagnosed and treatment is begun.
arnisador 08-06-2008, 04:04 PM Good luck, dude! Keep on keepin' on. They'll take care of you there--just don't try to hide problems from them. Today...go for a run! Get ready for camp.

Thanks guys!

This is such a good point....that happened to me 13 years ago when I joined the Army....I made it to 6 months of training....managed to just barely pass the run in Basic, got to AIT and allergies triggered my asthma in a bad way and could not run in the time allotted. I got discharged for PT for failing the run, even though I had already passed the school training....real heart-breaker...don't make the same mistake I did. Go get checked out...seriously.

bowser666 08-06-2008, 11:04 PM Speaking from experience I know recruiters can do shady things sometimes. I had a medical problem that they were able to "fudge" on the paperwork and suffered a medical injury while in basic which in turn caused me to recieve a Medical Discharge. My advice is if you have a pre-existing medical condition make sure to get full Doctor's approval before you go to Basic. Or it will be hell for you , especially if it is related to breathing. PT is almost 24/7 in Marines Basic Training. If you get excercise induced asthma and it is medically documented , they shoudl not be allowing you into military service. At least they didn't back when I was in the Military. Mid 90's.

MBuzzy 08-07-2008, 12:26 AM Good luck and keep your head down. Try to keep us updated the best you can.
Just remember, this is Marine basic. The keys to survival are to keep your mouth shut, do your best, and try to stay under the radar. Anything that makes you stand out in basic is a BAD thing!!!! Even if you stand out in a good way, TRUST ME, you can be the #1 recruit in basic....once you get to your real assignment, no one cares. Just get through it, get your assignment and get out!!!! :)
Oh yeah, and get used to being jerked around on your ship out dates. Welcome to the military!
girlbug2 08-07-2008, 08:48 AM Good luck, and thank you for entering the service on behalf of your country.
tshadowchaser 08-07-2008, 09:07 AM Good luck recruit
Let us know at the end of basic how it went

Actually, I tried this tactic. If you stay under the radar too long, you get noticed by the DI's as that guy that is trying to stay under the radar. And then you start getting placed on assignments so that you can have your "opportunity" to mess up. ;)

I suppose you just can't win. :)

That's one of the major points of Basic...
Simple advice: Eyes and ears open, mouth shut. Follow directions. Never do less than your best.
Follow that, and you'll not only succeed in Basic, but in many other endeavors in life.
Semper Fi 08-07-2008, 01:59 PM Best of luck and stay motivated recruit. =)
CuongNhuka 08-10-2008, 02:17 PM I'll be back 90 days from today (that's November 7, by the way).
Andy Moynihan 08-10-2008, 02:32 PM Remember to turn your socks inside out :)
Remember---don't take anything the DI's say personally. This is boot camp--for every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.
If you just don't take it personal, do what you're told, when you're told, it'll be as much of a breeze as boot ever gets.
Good Luck and I look forward to calling you Marine next time we "meet".
Andy
Kacey 08-10-2008, 02:55 PM I'll be back 90 days from today (that's November 7, by the way).
Take care of your feet - come back and tell us how it went.
theletch1 08-10-2008, 02:58 PM To paraphrase what Andy said:
Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut!
The most important thing to remember is that you are going to become one of a brotherhood that should have deeper meaning for you than any other connection you've ever had with another human being. When one of you screw up all of you will pay. In boot it means extra punishment. In combat it means you're dead. YOU are nothing by yourself. As a part of the Corps you are great. Good luck. Tradition, honor, integrity. These things are important to a Marine. For God, country and Corps. :asian:
arnisador 08-10-2008, 04:18 PM Good luck, dude! It's only 90 days...keep your spirit up. Be sure to let us now how things turn out no matter what. Giving it your best is all you can do!
CuongNhuka 11-06-2008, 03:13 AM BOO YAH! Geuss who's home on 13 days of Boot Leave? Thats right! It's me, Cuong! I know some of you salty Devil-Dogs are thnking 'Wait, bull corn! Graduation is on Friday!'.... Yah, well, things are a little screwed up and I graduated a little early.
Oh, and I'm a Tan Belt Ninja now, so resprects, ok? haha.
Andy Moynihan 11-06-2008, 08:29 AM Well Done, Marine :)
Makes more sense now, some of what us "old guys" were talking about, I'll bet. :)
CoryKS 11-06-2008, 10:35 AM *sniff* *sniff* I smell boot. ;) Welcome to the family, devil dog!
MBuzzy 11-06-2008, 10:45 AM MOS and Station?
CuongNhuka 11-06-2008, 12:48 PM MOS and Station?
1342 (Engineering Mechanic), which is a glorified way of saying I fix heavy machineering, ie earth movers. So when I go to my MOS school in December after MCT, I'll be learning how to fix bull dozers and the like.
My station is Fort Omaha. I know this because I'm a Reservist (or a 'tampon' in Marine-speak). Ft Omaha is a tiny little base of Navy and Marines, mostly Reservists and Active Reservists.
grydth 11-06-2008, 01:55 PM I hope they at least give you enough free time to see Army win the annual Army-Navy game!:-popcorn:
Oh.... and to you goes my highest respect for volunteering to defend our country.

Nope. Didn't know it had come either. All I know is, I don't think I'd watch that came for the chearleaders though. Fat Navy (censor) aren't that appealling to me.

Outstanding! Great career field. I'm an Air Force Civil Engineer, so I'm the one that USES the heavy machinery - well, ours, not Marines, but close enough. Good deal!
Keep us posted on Tech school and the like. Especially when you hear about deployments - while I hope you don't have to go, it is certainly a big possibility. I figure I'll be back over there within a year. If you have a choice, shoot for Al Asad....AWESOME Marine base! One of the best places in Iraq.

It's more likely that I'll go to Afghanistan. My unit also just got back a few months before I enlisted, so it'll probably be a year or so from when I actually report in until I get deployed. Atleast that's what my recruiter told me, but I don't know. He hasn't really screwed me over yet, so he seems reliable. But, it doesn't matter, I'll get deployed when I get deployed. No reason to worry about it.
DavidCC 11-07-2008, 11:53 AM welcome home! Get a chance to show off some of your MCMAP moves yet in your Cuong Nhu class?

Sorta.... I didn't really learn anything new. Basic wrist manipulation = kote gaeshi done as if it were a hard style tech. Te reverse is osto gari. Dfense against a rear bear hug is over the neck take down (I cann't remember the Japanese). Basic Warrior Stance is forward parallel stance, so on and so forth. It did the mind moving though. I did spend about 45 minutes showing them the MCMAP version of the tech.s though.
I'll keep an eye for some Brit.s Tez. You're gonna need to keep me up to date on things like unit name and deployment time, so on.
