I just started a blog to chronicle my martial arts journey. I am a 43 yo mom of two who just started about a year ago and just got my yellow belt a few months ago, but I am going back to the beginning and bringing myself up to current rank. Then, going on a day by day basis of what is currently going on in my journey and maybe some fun sidebars but still within the MA subject. All kidding aside, I absolutely love martial arts and can see myself staying with it the rest of my life. And when I'm older and wiser in my journey, I would like to write a book about my experience for women like me (or men!)who start studying a martial art later in life and who is more surprised themselves than anyone else! : ) Since I try to see the humor in things, my blog pokes fun at myself and the situation sometimes. And I tend to say things that others only think to themselves. LOL! If you'd like to stop by, here is the spot to go, but keep in mind, I am brand spanking new to blogging, so bear with me as I get to learn the ropes. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for the kind words. The whole experience has been life changing and I just love the way martial arts make me feel about myself. I have more confidence in myself than I've ever had in my entire life. I hope to share that with others and have fun in the process. Thanks again!

Thanks. Glad I could inspire you. I am having a blast with the blog, but am having trouble "reeling in the readers". I think my content is interesting, it's just a matter of making it known to people who'd be interested in the subject matter. And someday, when I do get my black belt, I really do plan on putting it into a book. Thanks again and stop by the blog often as I update the posts frequently.

Your blog is detailed, comprehensive, and insightful. I believe that you definitely did the right thing in avoiding your Russian Professor.
My first teacher, who is now a full Tai Chi Praying Mantis Instructor always stressed to avoid conflict. He used to say that people have an innate sense of danger and if you can leave a potentially dangerous situation, it is the best method of self defense.
I think it is great that you train where ever you can but I would caution you a little on this. People who are not martial arts can be closed minded at times.
They see someone practicing a form or technique and they think that they are violent and dangerous. They do not see a dedicated individual that is trying to learn a discipline that takes a lifetime to master.
I hope you do not run into this but it sometimes happens.
I wish you well in your martial arts training and your writing.
Regards,
Steve

That's a very good point from Steve above .
It's especially true if, like me, your martial art involves the use of long sharp things. Essentially I simply cannot practise outside of our school - unless that is I want to either get arrested or shot (depending on whether the armed response team talks to me first or not :)).

I don't have too much trouble with places where I practice. Not too many people see me. But I did just write in my latest post on my blog about bo staff practice. I do practice that out in the front yard because I have more open space than anywhere else. I have only done it like three times total. But I do remember my sensei saying that you should not give people the upper hand in knowing what you know or that you even practice m.a. (Oh, I think I have my next blog post subject! :) But, yes you're right - it is a shame some people are close minded. If they only knew how wonderful it is...

We've gotten the same advice, and it is a shame - because it is just SO MUCH FREAKIN' FUN!
