Hi there,
I have lurked on this site for about a year. I have been in Tae Kwon Do for almost a year. I am having a hysterectomy and appendectomy next week and am wondering if any other women have had the same thing and how long before they were back training. Also was there anything light exercise they did before returning. My doc says six to eight weeks, but I don't think he realizes that there is some rough sparring involved too. He 's kinda like we'll do what you feel like. I am afraid of messing things up internally.Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I can't help either... but I did have a friend who had a hysterectomy, and she was back to her swim aerobics class in 3 weeks, with no side effects. I would talk to your doctor, and then your instructor.

Here's hoping you have an uneventful surgery and a quick, painless recovery!

I think the best thing as Kacey says is to talk to your doctor but the thing to remember is that the recovery period doesn't last too long and the original problem causing the need for surgery will be gone! I've heard many women say that after they've recovered from the surgery they feel they've had a new lease of life!

Thanks for the replies, I did go for my pre op today. He told me 4-8 weeks that I would know because my belly would swell up if I did too much. I can do all the walking I want and will wait till my 4 week check up and see how I feel and what he says. Also he said ease into sparring. I figure it will be a good time to strengthen my wrists since they really bother me at times.

Surgery was without complications. I spent one night there and feel pretty good. It's going to be so hard to not do anything. Right now restrictions are in place for three weeks. So I guess I will do tons of walking since that is about all I can do. I figure I'll go visit my classmates at the beginning of July and see how they are. Thanks for the support.

I'm pleased everything went well for you! It is hard not to do anything but just remember when you are told you are fit by the doctors it's going to be a sweet moment! the problems necessitating the operation will be sorted and your future will look very bright, onwards and upwards as they say!

Like Tez, I'm glad to hear everything went well for you! Just remember, when the doctor clears you for activity, that you won't be as fit as you were - take it easy and don't rip anything; it's better to start slow than to have to recuperate a second time.

I only walked and biked for seven weeks after my surgery. Then I went back to training, with limited sparring. My surgery was in April, I returned to training in June and tested for Black Belt in September.

Crunches were interesting at first, then things started to feel normal again. If you pay attention to your body, you'll know when it's it ready.

Thanks for the reply, that kinda gives me an idea. Right now all I do is walk. I was told this week I can go swimming. You are so right about listening to my body, because it does protest a little more these days. My Masters are very cautious too. I was thinking I will try to be back in September when the session starts. So it gives me time to work back.
