Well, I may not be able to make it, but at least I can give some moral support.
I say hikite.

Looks like early June is emerging as the favorite... that's really my only slot as well (June in general is OK, but earlier is better).

Time? Date? Place? Any more thoughts? Is MD ok for everyone at Errant's?

Sounds like a great time. I wouldn't know Hikite from Kimchi but I wish you all the best in the gathering :asian:

Meaning holding it at the temple?

If it's in Maryland, I will definitely find a way to be there! I have almost nothing to contribute to the topic, but I have enjoyed watching your discussion and learning, and I would love the opportunity to meet some of my MT brethren in person.
OK, if I came, I would bring my d34d1y Ninjamom skills - meaning I would lurk silently in the shadows, until suddenly jumping out with no warning with a batch of freshly-baked cookies.

MD is fine with me! And Ninjamom, please do come—this is a the-more-the-merrier kind of idea... :)

I've been meaning to contact you anyway since we're in the area, and you definitely seem to have a good grasp of historical KMA knowledge. Please come out, it'd be great to have you.
I bounce in Annapolis on Saturday nights at the Sly Fox Pub, so we're definitely neighbors.
And cookies are always appreciated. Especially chocolate chip.

OK, so who is willing to offer workshops, how much time do you want?
Do we want to open this up to non-MTers? I am reasonably sure we could drum up quite a bit of interest in this topic.
Would anyone be interested in a class in Iron Wheel or Zen?

One of the TKD application threads.
OK, so looking at the temple's schedule, how does Saturday, June 7th work for everyone?

I'm not really qualified to teach anyone anything, E.... I'm a student of TKD from a certain angle, but I'm not even a Shodan at this point—won't be going up for my dan test till September. I've thought and worried about stuff, but mostly I'm hoping to learn more about practical applications from watching a number of like-minded people, practitioners with the same overall take as I have but way more experience. I hope that doesn't come across as too parasitic... I'll try to pay my way by being a good-natured uke—I'm pretty good at that!
One thing I can do is bring my questions about the combat interpretation of the Palgwes and try to bring up what seem to me to be problems that might yield to shrewd analysis. Does this sound useful? In bunkai/boon hae matters, I've felt from day one that many heads are better than one or two.

Everyone can have ideas. It's better to keep an open mind.
I can do some work on Naihanchi Applications. I also have a degree in Jujutsu and can teach some basic throws/escapes and how they relate to forms.
I don't know any TKD forms, but I've got the majority of the TSD syllabus... (In a slightly modified form).

Just wanted to give this thread a BUMP:
6/7/08 is just a little more than ONE WEEK away.
Errant, could you please post an address or directions to your location?
What time should we arrive?
Chocolate Chip Cookies: With or without nuts?
Assuming we're still ON, looking forward to meeting each of you.

In talking with JWLuiza, we came to the conclusion to postpone it, as I'd like to have some actual instructors come out who specialize in some of the things we've been discussing, such as Master Penfil.
So, I'd like to open up a new date discussion amongst everyone, if that's possible.

Greetings to all,
I just got introduced to this thread by Ninjamom...
If you guys are interested in setting up a seminar, I'm in...
My school is always open to you here in Michigan,
We will have a "Weekend Training Camp" on Okinawan Weaponry (Kobujutsu) at Sensei Peter Carbone's dojo in Northville, Michigan the weekend of September 12th (Just a couple of weeks away!!!). Everyone is welcome to come in and participate, even if you don't have any experience with Kobujutsu.
We have a new member school in "RED LION, PA" called; Red Lion Karate!!!
I will be there every two or three months to teach seminars, and everyone will be welcome to attend and participate there as well.
If you have a location that you would like me to teach at, that can be arranged as well!!!
Contact me directly either by email at: masterpenfil@yahoo.com (masterpenfil@yahoo.com)
or by cell phone at: 248-444-0343
All the best,
Sensei Jay S. Penfil

I forgot totally about this thread with everything that happened with my mom. I'm still interested in getting this done. My school is kind of insular with bringing in outside instructors so I can't help through that avenue. (besides I already tried).
Thoughts?
Ninjamom

Thoughts?? How 'bout ....
1. Master Penfil has graciously agreed to particiate as an instructor, but his schedule is extremely tight, so we should try to work around his availability,
2. He will be in Red Lion, PA on a regular schedule (which will cut out any additional travel costs - after all, if we invite someone as a 'guest instructor' we would need to think about paying for his travel to get there),
3. Everyone who was planning to come before was willing to travel anywhere in the DC Metro area,
4. Red Lion, PA (outside York, straight up I-83 from Baltimore) just isn't that far away that those of us in the DC area couldn't commute (or carpool - I have a 12 passenger van, for any starving students in the area that don't mind a woman driver, and for exile and MBuzzy I think York, PA is closer to your neighborhood than DC),
and
5. If it's not too much of an imposition, can we schedule it for the Red Lions location around Master Penfil's availability?
If the school is available for Sat. afternoon and/or Sunday, we could make either a weekend or a day trip out of it. For using someone else's gym/location, I recommend we each donate some TBD amount. It needs to be reasonable, but not so much that it makes it impossible (on top of gas/travel expenses) for people to come. (I'm thinking $20 each or so). Depending on attendance, this could even leave something left over as an 'honorarium' for our Distinguished Guest Instructor (at least enough to cover a Whopper and fries ;) ).
I hope I am not being presumptuous in offering someone else's school, but I think it at least bears asking the question.

Hey all,
This IS excellent news! I teach at Red Lion Karate! And I would LOVE to meet the people behind the profiles here on MT!
My father, Master Gene Lau (5th dan TSD), and his wife, Amy Lau (3rd dan tsd), own the school. It is a very large school (15,000 sq ft) and we have plenty of room to host a seminar. My father and Amy are going to be in Michigan with Master Penfil for the Kobujutsu weapons seminar at Master Peter Carbone's dojo, September 12th-14th.
I will definitely speak with my father about this issue. We would love to have Master Penfil down again soon for another seminar, as he is currently one of our instructors. The last time Master Penfil visited, we had him here for a few days. We trained and talked with select friends and students here and there, but we had one main seminar which was focused upon Master Penfil's teachings. We charged $25 for participants. That's probably about the price we're going to stick with; it helps to pay for Master Penfil's airfare and the cost of setting everything up. Like I said though, I have to speak with my father and his wife to see about organizing a meet up before I can say anything final.
For right now, keep checking this thread and let me know what everyone's thinking. I'll try to get my father on board and then we'll have to see when Master Penfil would be able to come down for another visit. If there's anyone else who would have to travel a fairly long distance, let me know so we can try to work with your schedule as well...
Yours in training and in friendship,
Instructor Graham Lau

Graham,
I will get together with all of you to work out the arrangements!!!
I LOVE training with you and your students... I have already trained with some of the other MT members and have always had great times.
For those in the Baltimore area, Master JB Yager has come up 3 times already to train with us.
For those from DC and Virgina, my friend Andy Wilkerson came in the last time (last month).
My friend Stace Sanchez (kickpics.net) drove in from Maryland last month as well.
The drive time from these locations is not bad. I will look forward to meeting all of you in RED LION, PA for another seminar!!!
Ninjamom,
Thank you for contacting me to get me involved in this thread...
Please give me a call when you have a chance...
All the best,
JWLuiza

Are we looking at the November time frame?
Ninjamom
09-06-2008, 10:09 AM
I'm assuming we're talking about a weekend (Saturday and/or Sunday), but not Thanksgiving weekend. That gives us a choice of:
Nov 1/2
Nov 8/9
Nov 15/16 or
Nov 22/23
Any of these are fine for me except Nov 1/2.
Anyone else?

I will be meeting with Gene and Amy Lau next weekend. Since we are intending to have this program at their school I would like to have them establish a viable date.
I will get back with everyone as soon as I meet with them...
I am looking forward to meeting and training with all of you soon,
