I do Taekwondo and lost about 30 lbs in the first 15 months of training. I trained about twice a week for the first 5-6 months in which I lost about half the weight and then when I became fitter extended it to either 3 or 4 times a week. My weights now fairly stable and hasn't changed for the last 9 months.
If you've started from a base of no exercise and are now training 3 times a week and eating a bit better you've got to lose weight. Be patient it'll happen.

I actually gained weight, because I started TKD during my growth spurt years (read, teenager). I jumped up from 110 to 155.
Then I stopped eating right, and it dropped back down to 140. But my level of training stayed constant, so I'm inclined to think the workouts weren't the cause of the weight loss. I've put on lean muscle mass since then from weightlifting and more strenuous TKD workouts lately, and I'm back up to 155.

Jason, If you want to lose weight, you should join weight watchers along with doing kenpo. I lost 45 pounds on weight watchers. It's easy. doing the karate helps me keep the weight off too.

when I did TSD, I lost weight. And I got into good shape. I went 4-5 days a week. But I do TKD now. I feel like a gained weight, though. Some of it was muscle, but not all. I don't eat right either. I just added Judo to my training, and I want to eat right. I'll get the weight off again ;)

But it's muscle weight. I went from 110 to 122. I'm hungry all the time from working out, and I eat better.

you meant boobs, right?
They might get a bit smaller- but they might not. Plus if your friend gets trim & fit it probably won't be noticeable.

MA training has helped my control my weight. i lose a few and gain a few.. nothing major.
i lost the most weight by doing taebo. i know some might think that taebo is a joke, but it is great for stamia, endurance, and weight loss.

I've been able to pretty much maintain my weight since I've been training. I stay right about the same weight without going up or down much. I do train quite a bit, 5+ times a week, and even though I don't always eat healthy food, and I drink plenty of beer, my weight has stayed the same. I owe that to all of the time I spend in the dojang.
The only time I really lose weight is the month or two before a tournament in which I'm competing when I do put myself on a diet in order to make weight for my division. That's when I cut back on the beer and junk food... :(

I have come to the conclusion that there are two diets that work well. Either avoid animal fat and red meat all toghether, or avoid carbohydrates. I can avoid red meat easier, beer is a carb. Avoid sugar on either plan. If you do either of these and exercise moderately you will lose about 1.5 lbs a week. Seems like when you cut the fat out you also lose your appetite after a very short time. I lost about 40 lbs cutting the fat out and kept it off for 9 years, then my son and daughter in law moved in with me last year and she cooks red meat all the time so I gained back 20 lbs. Three weeks ago I said to myself ENOUGH. I have been avoiding red meat since and am down 4 lbs so far.

I have lost about 30 lbs. doing Scrapper's workouts. Printout the workouts for FREE at http://www.trainforstrength.com. I also run high intensity for about 20-minutes 3x per week.

I wanted to lose some weight recently and did it by cutting out Bread, Pasta, Rice, and pretty much any other carbohydrate. I went from 194 - 183 in 4 weeks. I also started doing some more cardio on top of kenpo class. I was still able to sneak in a light beer or two. I'm normally pretty thin but I tend to wear my beer a little bit. :)

eating right also plays a big part in weight control. training alone is not enough i feel. a combination of both is what you really need.

Ok here we go... to lose weight trying doing your own seperate workout as follows : Get a timer and train to start 3 rounds of 2 minutes each round on the basics punches had strikes etc. Rest 30 sec. to 1 min. in between rounds. Do quality kicks, strikes but dont be tied up on numbers. You can then switch to different excercises such as the kicking shield, heavy bag. The number of rounds can be increased as well as the length of the rounds. This is a boxers workout and I have found great results using it in martal arts training. Set up a training program. push ups, situps, kicks, speed bag and heavy bag and even weights. Try speed drills on techniques for another example. This builds massive stamina and sharpens your martial arts skills. As long asyou do it 4-5 times a week it will burn calories and pounds provided you dont head to Mcdonalds every half hour. Drink water, stay away from alcohol and stay consistent and you shall be lean before you know it.

I started on the "Atkins" regime, focusing on cutting out carbs/sugars. Lost 18 since Turkey Day, need 8 to go to get to my ideal weight.
The martial arts, weightlifting, and cardio were not enough. This is what I needed to help make it all work for me.
Course, I'm 47, so it makes a great difference for me.
Changing my diet was the final answer, and I really don't miss alot of that crap I ate before. :asian:

Well, I've lost about 80 pounds over the past couple of years. Most of it in the past 6 months. Check these pics: http://www.guild-hall.com/diet_pics
I'm down to 206 now and still losing. I don't want to get below 180 because, with my bone density and muscle mass, I don't think anything less would be healthy.
I didn't increase my workouts at all. I just changed my diet. The primary changes were:
less snacking
when I do snack, it's healthier snacks
pretty much cut out soda completely and drink a lot of water now
less bread & pasta
less red meat
more fish & poultry
5 or 6 smallish meals / day instead of 2 or 3 large meals
That's about it. Keeping a log of what you eat helps. I never had any idea of the sheer volume of food (not to mention junk) that I was putting in my body. But by eating 5 or 6 smaller meals through the day, I never get hungry. I also do a lot more cooking at home which has saved me some money in the long run (even when I occasionally buy something for its low calories/fat and throw it out because I don't like it).
The only exercise that I've added to my routine is an ab workout that I do 3 times / week (my abs are now starting, very tentatively, to peek out and say "hi" on occasion) and I do pushups 3 times / week for my pecs. I do the abs because I know that'll help my lower back (I don't have a lot of problems with it now, it's a preventative measure). And I work the pecs because I figure, if I'm losing the gut, I may as well lose the "man ****" too.
I actually started losing weight because, a couple of years ago, my knees and ankles (always problematic because of inherited problems) started getting worse and they started impacting my martial arts training. I hated it. But, at first, I didn't do anything about it because I just chalked it up to getting older. Then I stepped on a scale (hadn't been on a scale in a long time) and I weight nearly 290. I decided that, while I couldn't do anything directly about the knee/ankle problems, I could do something about the weight. And now, 1.5 years later, I'm 80 pounds lighter.
I've noticed that my knees and ankles don't give me as much trouble. But the most dramatic thing I've noticed (except when I see old pics/vid of myself) is my heart rate. At ~290, my resting heart rate was 74. Pretty impressive for a guy who's 5'8" and weighs nearly 290. Now, though, it's about 58 and I haven't done anything to improve it except to lose the weight :)

Just RUN 3-4 miles a day. You don't even have to change your diet.
Of course, a proper diet is essential for a healthy body, long term.
I would suggest do more research on your diet.
But if you are in hurry to lost 35 lbs. Take up running. 15-20 miles a week will burn the fat, increase your endurance. Great workout! I am almost certain you will drop that 35 lb in 4 weeks!
I run 3-4 miles a day, rain or snow.

You may not be losing weight because the training isn't providing the "aerobic effect" needed to increase and maintain a high metabolism rate.
I use running to burn off the pounds...1.5 miles every other day (in warm weather) - That'll do it.

I've gained about 15 pounds in the last year and a half. I need to gain several more though. Always been very tall and thin, got that Ichabod Crane look going on!! My time in the USMC didn't put the weight on me like kenpo has but I'm a good bit older now so it's hard to say whether age or MA has had more to do with it. I will, however, credit MA with keeping any weight I've gained from turning to fat. My wife studies with me and she has lost about 10 pounds (we do have a very aerobic warm up). MA alone won't do it for losing weight though. Good diet and additional work outs need to be done and I feel like anyone who is serious about the art will be motivated to do the extra.
respectfully,

Most people who lost 40-50 lbs when they first pick up TKD, were generally obese and under-exercised. The initial weight loss should not be used to draw a linear projection into the future. TKD itself does not turn you into MR.Olympia. Else, all the Korean masters and Grandmasters would look like Mr. Olympia, Mr. Universe. Hardly!

I haven't really lost any weight from practicing. Apart from losing the normal water weight after a hard day of sparring, I prety much see taking MA as also a way to keep myself at a weight that I like and stay trim.
Try the Body For Life by Bill Phillips. It's a simple workout plan that can include your MA training and a simple eating plan. As well it gives you a junk day once a week, thats the day you can eat whatever you want. I lost 20 lbs in three months.

My first 9 months in TKD I lost 50lbs, and kept if off for about 5 years until I stopped training. When I started again, I lost it, until I stopped...
Hmmm.. Maybe I should start training again!

Get a timer and train to start 3 rounds of 2 minutes each round on the basics punches had strikes etc. Rest 30 sec. to 1 min.
Holy crap does that work well. I did that a couple times(gota pick the habit up again) a light warm up round on the heavy bag. and then 5 two minute rounds with a 1 min break inbetween. does the sweat ever pour.
Yea i dunno, im kinda still growing but im not sure my weight goes up and sits for a while than goes up some more and sits. Im 16 now but when i was 15: my weight would be around 170, drop to 160 for like ever. Then i jumped WAY up to 180lbs where it sat for the longest time and just a month or two ago im down to 170 lbs but a test said i got about 17% body fat. I thought that was insanely for how i look, but what are you gonna do?(I was rooting for aruond 10%).
Could eat better but my weight doesnt change much and im in pretty good shape, training 2 times a week and whenever i feel like it on weekends. Phys ed class actually has improved my fitness beleive it or not. If you do put some good effort into phys ed class it can be a pretty good work out(for those of you still in school).
Speed training is great, i tried the candle thing. Blow the candle out with a punch, I got pretty good at it but stopped a while ago. That can be a pretty good workout if you do it enough. Basically, move around as much as possible! (I wish i would....)

when I started TKD, my flexibility increased ten fold and I lost a bit of weight, I was about 260 then. Then I started Kenpo and when to TKD once a week and I dropped to 195 because of diet and all the exercise. boy, do I feel better.
oh, and on the running side note...there is a snowball's chance in hell that I would start running....I smoke...you trying to kill my arse?
fifteen again...nah...I like nineteen...I can drive...buy cigarettes legally...hehe...and college is easier than highschool...at least for right now....and I get to sleep in later. oh...and I still watch cartoons, so I have officially not grown up yet, nor will I ever. being a kid is too much fun.:D :D :D

I have actually cut down on the amount of running that I do. I mostly skip rope now. IMHO, this is a very underestimated training tool. People tend to believe slick marketing that says that you need to use this or that piece fancy equipment. Just get a jump rope. If your ceilings are not too low, and you don't live in an apartment above someone else, you can skip rope @ home.
FIRST THINGS FIRST...
learn how to jump rope properly. People tend to "double jump" when skipping rope. This is a no-no because it puts unnecesary stress on your knees. When performed correctly, your calves absorb the shock rather than your knees.
Go to www.ringside.com. The have nice jump ropes, jump rope instructional videos, and jump rope mats.
A nice High Impact Interval Training (HIIT) approach works out well and doesn't take a heck of a lot of time. For example, skip rope for 30 seconds and then walk it off for 30 seconds. Do this 5 times and you'll see what it does for you...and it only took you 10 minutes.
As you become more advanced, skip rope for 3 minutes and walk it off for 1 minute - the way boxers do. It has been shown that HIIT burns fat much better than aerobic cardio (e.g. a long, slow distance run - jogging for 4 miles).
Train hard, kick a**
Peace & blessings,
khadaji
