Hello.

just a quick one how many times do you lap your belt around your waist?

This may sound strange to some but we have been instructed that te belt should lap around our waists once and this is to represent the following:-

Gain victory with one blow!
Serve one master.

there is one more but its late and the nogging is not doing its job at the moment.

what does eveyone else do?

Single wrap belts are nothing more than a cost-saving measure for the instructor. They didn't even come on the scene until a couple of years ago. Sorry, as far as I'm concerned they rank (pun intended) right there with velcro and camo belts.

I do the double wrap. Hmm, what kind of quotes or sayings can go with that. . . .

Gain victory with twice the power at twice the speed!
Because one good turn deserves another!
Serve two masters, the wife at home and the GM in the dojang!

To get back to the original question.

how many times do you lap your belt around your waist?

Not nearly as many times as 15 years ago, strange how belt sizes have shrunk over the years. :vu:

Yeah, shorter belts are impossibly tacky even though they look and function exactly the same.

I go with two also, it would be weird/uncomfortable to have just one wrap around.

I don't know. My father had a single wrap when he trained back in 1973. I have the uniform that he wore.

Double wrap here, all of my belts were. The colored belts now in the org are single wrap, double at black belt. I concur on it being a cost saving issue (although on the manufacturing end, not the school end).

We don't get shorter belts for the single tie round we get standard length and if to long then they got to be cut back!

our school is part of the UKTA under Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha 9th Dan. as far as im aware he is vice president of the ITF. So we kind of got to do as he says!.

Twice. More support for swords and other weapons.

Two trips around the ever-expanding waist here, too.

2 for us too.
We have stripe velcro belts for our little ninjas class (3,4,5 y.o.) that only wrap around once. I have found they come untied just as often as normal belts though so really the velcro doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

For the under 6 crowd, I think single wrap is fine. Double wrap for everyone else.

I guess I'd never heard of single-wrap belts before. When did they come in?

Now a days they even have single wrap with velcho to try it together.

As far as im aware it has been in for a while ive got an old looking ITF book that runs through the whole sylibus from 10kup to 1st dan and it has a small section on it. Plus the UKTA have just released a 40th anniversary book that also has a section on it which includes why its done plus the Korean terminology.

Bigshadow mentions the double round would help carry more weapons! not sure if this would be the case as the TKD is very modern and so the people using it would be wearing modern-ish military clothing not doboks so a belt like this would not be needed. I may be wrong so correct me if i am.

We wrap ours twice, but as my belt is a size 7 (that's what they had, and I wasn't complaining! ) I could probably get it around me three times! If I wrapped it once the ends would hit the floor ;)

In my new school they give people little belts, I dont know why. For example, my dobok is 4 and my belt is 1. I hate that, because I used to wrap my belt twice, LOL. For my husband is worst because his dobok is 7 but his belt is 0 o_O

Two laps. Sort of counter-intuitive, but if you have a size 3 uniform, you'd wear a size 3 belt, right? Would that belt fit properly if it were wrapped 1x? 3X?

For those who use single wrap belts, do these have a size different from that of your dobak?

I can remember when a size 5 went around twice--easily. Now, I gotta have an 8 just to make any kind of knot. Good thing I'm the instructor and can make up a story for why the knot looks so funny and the ends so short. :D

I asked today and they told me they gave us more little belts because they want us to use a single-wraped one. I don't know more, but I'll ask the grand master next time.

Perhaps the third one is to trip you up? I've never seen one wrap before...even the fatties manage two... then again I don't really look at that area much in training.

The belt that came with the dobak I ordered from Comdo a while back had a single wrap belt included with it, same size tag as the uniform.

We use double wrap belts, as do most martial arts schools, org.s etc.

Haha! My belt goes around my waist twice. It crosses itself in the back. That is our way. Haha! --> the belt is worn out a little bit where it USED to have the knot. The knot is in a different place now, because my waist is bigger. Though not as handsome because of this, I still wear it, because that is my PRIDE!

Yep we do. The children I teach keep telling me though their belts should go round their waists and not round their heads gagging them.

I agree 100%. But I am thinking the velcro backed belts might be good for really young children
