View Full Version : What is your Favoright martial art weapon?
Despairbear 12-20-2001, 01:26 PM Greetings All,
Here is a question for you; What is you favoright martial art weapon and why?
Things to consiter; cost, carrying legality, concealability, applicability in street use, elegance, fun, tradition, etc......
At my dojo we have recently started to train with the cane, I am rather impressed with it as a weapon. And the ablity to carry it anywhere is a great bonus. But I think I enjoy the WMA war sword a little more in practice. Who knows.....

Bob Hubbard 12-20-2001, 02:07 PM From the practical side, I find 'stick' work to be most versitile. Bo/Jo training can easily be adapted to broomstick, poolcue, plunger, etc. Cane techniques fit right in. :)
Knives you can run afoul with local laws on concealed weapons.
Favorite weapon? Easy 1. Sword. :) To me, its the most fun to train, even though its current "practical" usage is nil. But again, alot of the FMA stick work lends it self very well to sword work, with some minor mods.
Hmmm....sword cane....best of both worlds. :D

Cthulhu 12-20-2001, 04:53 PM Fave that I've had no formal training in: katana
Fave that I've had training in but will get strange looks if I walk around with them: sai
Fave that I can carry: ASP baton (glorified stick)
Fave that I can carry if I pay the $100 bucks or so for the permit: Browning Hi-Power 9mm
Fave I could probably get away with carrying, but it got broken: Gerber Gator Serrator folding knife

GouRonin 12-20-2001, 04:56 PM I like my fists. Oh, I like my elbows too, and my knees, i use my head sometimes.
And luckily I carry most of these things with me when i go out.
:D
Jay Bell 12-20-2001, 08:19 PM Tanbo (eda koppo) :D Small, compact, not considered a weapon....and adds the effect of jointlocks and strikes 10 fold if used properly.
A close second would have to be jo.

I studied iaido years back and this remains my favorite. But the arnis baston is fun too.
Datu Tim Hartman 12-20-2001, 09:52 PM Sticks Rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jay Bell 12-20-2001, 10:06 PM The reason katana isn't my favorite.... it's very difficult to "play" with a katana. You swing, they open up, they die, you clear the blade and go home. There's too much of a level of permanency to it. (though it is #3 on my list)
Bob Hubbard 12-20-2001, 11:44 PM With the sword, Ya gotta do it Monty Python Style for it to be more fun....you know, from MP and the Holy Grail....the black knight bit....arms, knees, legs, etc. Take youre time, enjoy yourself.
I swear, everyones in such a hurry. :D

It's amazing how many different styles there are for it! Chinese doesn't look like Japanese which doesn't look like Okinawan, and so on.
As an aside, yesterday's local paper reported a woman practicing with a sword in a park was stopped by a police officer. She spoke no English and so didn't understand his instructions to put down the sword--he had to draw his sidearm before she did. No charges are being filed--she was visiting from China for her son's college graduation and the police marked it down as a communication problem. I remember when I used to walk home from iaido practice with a sharp sword hoping no one would ask me what I was carrying (or better yet that someone would try to mug me at knifepoint).
Mr. Hartman will remember as I do crossing from Michigan to Ontario in a car full of weapons and being questioned by the border guards. I was asked where I was from and responded "America", drawing a surly "North America or South America?!" response from a Canadian guard who obviously felt that Canada was part of America also. Traveling with weapons can be a pain. Returning to the original question, however, I've been known to stick a folder or balisong in my pocket if walking late at night, just in case.
Icepick 12-21-2001, 12:49 PM Arnisador -
I love those border checks!
"Are you carrying any weapons?" - customs officer
<awkward pause, glancing nervously toward back seat>
"Umm, no?" - Tim and I
"Ok, go ahead" - co
<sigh of relief>
REALLY gets the heart rate going, better than Tae Bo!

Yes, I've been there. Honesty is not clearly the best policy in that case, when one is carrying sufficiently many weapons to overthrow the Canadian government.
Datu Tim Hartman 12-21-2001, 03:56 PM Hey,it only takes a sling shot to over throw them. They are all too busy watching hokey games to notice.
:flame:
GouRonin 12-22-2001, 05:00 PM I'll have you know that a cheesed off Canadian is nothing to laugh about! We're pretty laid back but just try and take our beer or hockey away and we will do a "Snow-mobile-by!" It's like a drive by but we just whack you with a hockey stick so it's almost fatal but not quite.
I'll tell you about the Canadian Military secret! We keep the gun in ottawa and the bullet in Vancouver. That's right, we only have one of each so we're saving it for a big war. Otherwise we just beat people down. Damn it! We'll pull that submarine out of the West Edmonton mall and commission it if we have to!
Oh man, you have me all worked up!

Bob Hubbard 12-29-2001, 10:59 PM I want to mention that due to the "wonderful" weather we're having here in Buffalo...I've found yet another use for a sword..... Ice Cutter! :) Its been very useful in carving a path to the road, 1'x1'x1' block at a time. :)
Rob_Broad 01-03-2002, 06:44 PM My favorite of the practical weapons is my Kubaton. My favorite non practical weapon for the street is my Bo staff. Or anything I can get my hands on.
Rubber Ducky 01-04-2002, 05:10 PM My favourite MA weapon is the knife. Second is the jo.
For some reason I don't get too excited about the katana, but I do like that as well.
As for concealing a knife, for the most part that's not a problem. Most folding blades are "knives" and not "weapons", so concealing them is not illegal. Fixed blades, concealed, may be another issue, but "accidental" concealment by a shirt or jacket (ie: the blade is attached to your belt) is not "concealment" for the purposes of Canadian law. The attempt must be deliberate.
I find it strange indeed that Canadians have more freedom in carrying weapons than Americans do, as long as it's not a firearm.
If you're thinking about overthrowing the government, just tell 'em "George told us to tell you..." and they'll bend right over.
It's the rest of us hockey-lovin', beer-drinkin' (except me), bacon-eatin', cousin-screwin' (oops, was that out loud?) Canucks you have to worry about. Just you wait until you're kicked in the shins by a skate, and just try to fight with your sweater up over your head! :moon:
GouRonin 01-05-2002, 01:40 PM Don't make fun of the "sweater-over-the-head" technique! It works!
:asian:
Bob Hubbard 01-05-2002, 07:00 PM Why am I now seeing a late night CTV action series.... "Gou ROnin and his Donughts of Doom, Eh!"? Hockey jerseys and capes....
Sorry about the tanget....had to say it. :)
Rubber Ducky 01-07-2002, 03:49 PM I know the sweater-over-the-head technique works, so would a kick with a skate!
Of course, the sweater technique is a little more practical for more of the year.

Rob_Broad 01-07-2002, 04:58 PM After last nights supper I would like take back my previous answer as to my favorite weapon. From now on I am taking my wife's biscuits with me wherever I go. I can only carry one or I'll end up with a quadruple hernia. These things were so heavy and hard that the knife wouldn't cut them. I wish she had made these when sandor had his contest going on. I could have won with those bad boys.
Thru them against a brick wall earlier today to break them for the birds and squirrels, and all the chuks are still there. Somewhere the Pillsbury BoughBoy is hanging his head in shame.
GouRonin 01-08-2002, 02:26 AM I'll eat almost anything. They don't call me a "mutt" fer nuthin'!
Rob_Broad 01-08-2002, 02:32 AM I want to buy a piece of land to built a house on, she already knows how to make the bricks so it won't be that expensive.
GouRonin 01-08-2002, 02:57 AM She's gonna kill you.
When she does, can i have your computer?
Rob_Broad 01-08-2002, 03:00 AM Unless you tell her what I have wrote done I am safe. She thinks my computer is a pretty paperweight. So she won't be reading what I have wrote.
GouRonin 01-08-2002, 06:27 PM Who's up to the balckmail plate first?
Rob_Broad 01-08-2002, 08:04 PM Just bring it. I am a glutton for punishment. Besides does anyone think I will let her out of the kitchen.
deadhand31 01-09-2002, 05:28 PM My favorite weapon would have to be the sai, simply for the versatility. With a sai, every part of the weapon can be used, it's a club, a prod, and a hook. Of course, it's hard to find people who actually know how to wield them, considering that they're one of the hardest weapons to learn (i believe the the 3 sectional staff is among these?). In most instances that i've seen, i've seen people wield them like blades, which I find hard, considering that they have no edge.
WuTang 01-16-2002, 06:52 PM Whatever I can grab a hold of at the time of the fight.
Dronak 01-16-2002, 08:58 PM I have no actual experience with martial arts weapons, but I've always kind of liked the staff.

tshadowchaser 01-18-2002, 11:32 AM I like to carry my walking stick or cane, the ones made of wood are allowed almost everywhere (even on planes, and in court rooms). My knivs are my favorite weopons but some law enforcement officalsdo not look kindly on them.

I'm gonna hafta go with the kali stick. It can be substituted
for, really well. Like with a cane, or umbrella, have a pool
cue. I think I'll carry a cane with me next time I fly. I wonder
how a.p. security handle that one, does anybody know?
hehehe .. grab the cane away when you're not lookin .. if you
fall, then you can take it with you on the plane LOL.
One more post to get promoted, WOOHOO!!! :ninja:
tshadowchaser 01-24-2002, 11:38 PM Not sure how ap security are today but a while back all they would do is examin the cane or possibly run it through the x-ray if it was not conceling anything else they let you carry it on.
Walking with a limp helps
brianbarton 01-25-2002, 05:22 AM Some may say, it's not the weapon. It's what you do with your weapon.
Rubber Ducky 01-25-2002, 11:57 AM Brian Barton,
are these the same people that say that size doesn't matter? :p

brianbarton 01-25-2002, 12:04 PM Yes,
..... and can I say I am not of this thinking.
Brian
I have been known to have some very strong opinions about weapons and the opinions about the training in them on a professional level. I tend to be sort of a rebel and many dont understand at times, where i come from because i cover so many different perspectives when i do go out there with my opinions.
Now one of the core programs i teach is called weapons 101 the concept here is that everything is a weapon.... so this time I am not going to be talking about what is practical on the streets or what is the most deadly thing I should carry, because that’s business. I do that for a living and favorite and what is neesacarly the best for the streets is not the same to me as favorate.
And because this is about my favorite weapon…This is cool because I am going to give this from a very selfish one-sided view of what my favorite weapon is right now on a personal level.
Traditional weapons and the art part that goes with learning how to handle the weapon for me is on a strictly selfish level of personal choice and joy....
Out of all the toys, i have. Weapons i have touched and trained with, or had in my hands to admire and have bonded with...
My favorite weapon right now is my little Kris daga. The Kris and its shape make it distinct from any other single edged and double-edged blade. Its blade is double edged, and wavy, this allows easy blood flow from an inflicted wound.
The dagger was traditionally a sacrificial weapon. it was used throughout the Southern Philippines historically, its origins are by some said to be Malay.
In the Philippines, there are many different kinds of Kris; each region that produced Kris blades had a different number of waves in the blade, lengths and styles of waves giving each region there own markings of distinction to their weapons.
I love the Kris, from sword length blades to the smaller daga length, as the one i enjoy fully now in private solo training.
The blade on my Kris runs 8 inches long, the tip to end length with handle is around 11 1/2 inches to 12 inches long.
This is one of those cool weapons that sort of fell into my hands, I was not out looking for it, but just sort had it handed to me, and once it was put in my hand it suited me and seems to have been meant for me...
Actully, I have never bought any of my weapons. Other then, sticks for teaching and training others with. On a personal level… Over the past 28 years since I was given my first real weapon. All of them have been gifts or sort of showed up…
I dont have a clean single picture of the knife but, their is a picture of me holding this blade on my website on my organizations bio pages.
I am told i look somewhat evil with it in my hand...:) Personally for me, though it is a lovely weapon, I really enjoy it right now, and the flow I am getting with it in solo training.
Note: 3 years ago I was in love with this black short ninja sword, that I would strap on my back and then hide from my friends and jump them from the dark with as they entered my pad………:)
IE: friends. All trained in weapons arts and having too much fun surviving my unexpected attacks…
now I am just hiding out with the Kris and pinning them to the wall facing its edge… hey they need the training………:)
and I need the fun…

Rob_Broad 01-26-2002, 12:26 AM Since I get in trouble calling my wife's cooking a weapon. i will have to say the gray matter between my ears is my favorite weapon. And I don't mean the lint.
TLH3rdDan 03-02-2002, 03:27 AM hummmm favorite weapon thats a tuff choice... lets see for just plain stopping power my .45... for all other practical instances where im not allowed to carry my gun i prefer my cold steel folding tanto... as far as a traditional martial arts weapon i studied so many it is hard to narrow it down to just one so ill give my top 5.... katana, three section staff, butterfly swords, nunchaku, and tiger hook swords.
masherdong 02-23-2005, 04:03 PM I like the escrimas. You can always pick up a stick in a street fight.
Knifehand 02-24-2005, 11:15 PM I thought for a long time that the Bong would be a great weapon to use, for i have never used one. but we had a Nunchuku class and i was floored with them. I went out the next day and bought a practice pair and started practicing with them. I love them... they are really easy to learn to use and they have many uses.
Here are my Top Five:
1) Samurai Katana
2) Nunchuku/Bong
3) Bong/Nunchuku (depends on situation for both, either 2nd or 3rd for both)
4) Kama
5) Sythe(s)
Whitebelt 02-25-2005, 11:48 AM I like Shurikens. And if you'r not carrying any you can use a rock!

From a looks/forms standpoint, I've always loved the Tiger Hook swords. Never learned them, but they look sweet! :)
Overall favorite? would be a tie between the rattan stick, and the Kerambit (spelling may vary).
The stick is more realistic, as a makeshift one can be found just about anywhere. It's application is effective, and can be non-lethal. The Kerambit is a very subtle weapon, and is easily concealed. Legality comes into play very quickly, but all weapons will if brandished in a useful manner.

And I know you didn't necessarily ask this but since others mentioned it, for self defense in today's world: A sig in 40 S&W, 45 ACP or any flavor 357 mag.
exile 11-17-2006, 04:30 PM Throwing stars (with enhanced edges if need be), fired from a range of four to five feet, with a tactical folder in the left hand holding the reserve shuriken. To be used against the guy in the parkade who thinks he owns you because he has a knife or a baseball bat. Carry four stars in your weak-side hand and move in on the assailant, throwing at his face from about six feet away in rapid succession. Followup when in close range is up to you.
bushidomartialarts 11-17-2006, 04:47 PM i like the cane.
you can carry it anywhere. it's longer than most other weapons that people take with them. there are some cool things you can do with the crook.
plus there's that sort of 'poetic justice' feeling you get when you whomp on someone who attacked a person walking with a cane.
the big difference about canes, though, is that they're non-escalatory weapons. where most weapons make you appear more dangerous, thus making people less likely to make smart decisions, a cane makes you appear less dangerous. people who aren't being made nervous make better choices. and if they still make a bad choice, you're armed very well.
