For those womwn that carry a purse , What do you carry in it that you would use in an emergency situation? Is it easily acsessible( the weapon that is)? Would youreally have time to get to it (whatever it is)?

I don't carry anything in my purse for self defence, I have a kubatton (sp?) keychain that is either in my hand or in a pocket at all times.

I'm not sure but I believe there are legal restrictions for us up here in Canada to carry pepper spray and definitely none of those zapper thingys.

Do you carry a comb with a pointed end. a lip stick container that is as solid as your Kubotin? Think about the question and about what can be a weapon. Hairspray?

Your keys can make a decent weapon too. Hold them with one stuck up between two of your fingers and your punch could be pretty nasty.

What kind of kubatton do you have KenpoGirl?

Cool, just wondering what people carried.

I don't usually carry anything important in my purse.

in my pocket, however are:

keys
wallet

in my purse are:

make-up
loose change
cell phone
whatever else my male friends want me to put in there, such as their sunglasses, phones, and wallets, because they don't have anywhere to put them. LOL.

In an emergency situation I would most likely drop any bag I had not that I usually carry one anyway. But there is no way I would be caught dead fumbling around looking for keys while something was about to go down. Whats more important than what Ive got, is what "they" have got.....namely 2 sets of balls, 2 for each "brain". Id be grabbin for them instead. :D

I'm a bit like a snail, I virtually carry my whole home in my handbag. Rather than what's in my bag that would be useful as a weapon, my bag itself would make a pretty deadly weapon I think. :D Most of the stuff in there would be pretty useless anyway, paperback books, tissues, loose change maybe, my makeup bag etc.

Anway, I kinda agree with Bagatha, if I'm attacked while I'm out I'm not gonna spend precious minutes fumbling around in my bag looking for a potential weapon. I do carry me keys in my hand though, if I have to walk alone at night or in an area that makes me feel nervous for any reason.

Bagatha and Kim Bell are right; if it's IN the purse, you won't be able to access it when you're jumped. This is why th kubotan carried as a keychain is so useful; you just remember to always have your keys in your hand when you leave the building or whatever....of course, you must train very extensively with the kubotan if you are to be able to use it with any real effect.

At the last self defense class I taught, one of the women wanted to see a scenario of having your purse grabbed. It ended up with the attacker on the ground and the long purse handle around his neck. Don't even know what was in the purse.

I carry everything but keep my keys in my hand when I'm out by myself.

if someone's grabbing your purse, give it to them for godsakes! whatever's in it isn't worth your life, and you don't know what he knows. he could be a much better martial artist, he could have a gun. Martial arts is merely a tool, and like any tool, its success depends on the skill of the user, and sometimes its simply the wrong tool for the job.

I'd rather hand over the purse, especially if its just a run by and snatch situation. If I have my wallet in there, well, credit cards can be cancelled, licenses reissued, and cash is only money.

Unless the assailant is trying to harm you or another person, let them take whatever they want. Things can be replaced. People can't.

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents. Here in Victoria, Australia Kubotan are a restricted weapon so it's not worth the trouble you could get into to carry one. Also why carry pepper spray, give a would be attacker some nasty alcohol based deodorant in his eyes and he'll soon get the message. Lastly, yes give an attacker your bag if he grabs it but if you see someone approaching why no arm yourself with something in it.

Cheers

Although I admit that I have a lot of junk in my pocketbook, I have a few things that I could use as weapons. I ALWAYS have my keys in my hand when I leave a building (dojo, home, movie theater, etc.) I never want to be caught at the door of my car or home rifling (sp?) through my bag for my keys. Even in today's society, I still see a few women doing that. I also have a cell phone which I could hit some on the head;a pen and a tweezer which I keep separate from my make up.

so what's in your purse?

I've been carrying a kubotan and keys for years now but I just recently added a small micro maglite and a Fox40 whistle. My purse is fairly small and it's just one pocket that I often leave open when I'm walking places. This way I can reach in and quickly grap almost anything in it without having to dig through or anything.

the antenaes on these things are nastier than hell...especially if they're the short, stubby ones that are part of the phone itself. a fellow female student that shall remain nameless decided to poke me with it...in the chest...it left a nice welt...hurt like hell..but she was proud. ;) now imagine taking that in a nice wide arc to the back of some guy's wrist or hand...that could easily cause enough incentive for he or she to let go.

Haha, I have Moby Dick and my graphing calculator in my purse... along with keys, wallet, journalism notebook, etc. I think my brush would hurt like hell if I hit someone with it, but I'd probably go with the "aim low" technique...

the same idea could be applied to a hairbrush handle or a tightly rolled notbook...compact, sturdy weapon that's gonna hurt lick hell. :D

that made me very proud :p ...i think i have pens that are great to stab people with your purse it's self can be used as a weapon, my brother has learned that from experience. i have a handful of keys that will make just about anyone cry if hit with them, lip glosses, perfumes that can be sprayed in the face. i'm going through my purse looking for all kinds of goodies the possibilities are endless. and as chronuss has already mentioned my cell phone is great and it's hard and if it gets broke rather it get broke than me get broke

perfumes that can be sprayed in the face. Most perfumes give me a busting head ache so spraying one just in my general direction would send me packing.

no kidding...some of the stuff these women wear could peel paint off walls...so an eyeful would definately be a good deterrent...

I tend to travel as light as possible; however, the two most dangerous things found in my purse would be my spiked kubaton keychain and on rare occasion, my gun (if, because of certain clothes I might wear that doesn't allow me to carry the gun directly on myself). My purse is designed to have a detachable gun holster in a section that is separate from all the other stuff and allows for quick access.

Other than that, all you will find in there would be a small brush, a small makeup bag (touch-up concealer and eyeliner.. that's it), concealed carry permit/driver's license/currency/credit card.

As with using weapons, the gun has to be practiced with drawing, whether from my IWB holster or my purse holster. My dominant hand is free to access it when needed. The kubaton is always in my other hand until I'm in the car, my door locked, and I'm on my way.

I picked up one issue of that magazine Self Defense for Women. It said to always carry a dummy wallet stuffed with $1 bills and fake credit cards and stuff. "This way you can throw the wallet in one direction and run in the opposite direction."

Any thoughts on this?

Personally, I thought it was a bit overboard and not something I'd do, but anyone else heard of it or do it?

That is an EXCELLENT idea if the attacker's purpose is only to rob for $$.

I have no idea of the modus operandi of common robbers on the street. I wonder how many will let you walk away while they're looking in the wallet? Would any attempt to go after you if they find they've been gypped?

I've never heard of that and I'm not sure it would be very useful. If someone wanted my purse (which I don't carry :)), I'd just throw them the whole thing instead of going through it trying to find the fake wallet.

As I mentioned, I don't carry a purse, but I do have my keys ready when I leave a place. I also make sure one key is in between two of my fingers on my dominant hand. Someone told me to do this once in case I ever needed to hit someone. I also have mace that I carry in my car. I suppose it doesn't do me any good there unless I were to get carjacked, but that's where it is. I also keep another can of mace in my house.....which again doesn't do me much good. I have a lot of things that could be used as weapons inside my car (MagLite, umbrella, etc.) but don't usually carry anything on my person.

Somehing suggested by my sensei who has been working in security for several years; squirty jif lemon.

It stings the eyes without long lasting harm, is not illegal (not even in UK where I live) and will distract attacker long enough to either run or deal accordingly.
