I'm 16years old, 6'2ft.tall, I weigh about 128-135lb the most. The last time I weighed myself was in August, I was 128lb. Yes, I'm skinny, I have a fast metabilism, I eat a lot, eat a little, eat 2 or 3 times or even 1 time per day still no gain weight. I am still boney. I can show you guys some pictures later of my arms, I have experience in Shotokan Karate & Hung-Gar kung-fu. I don't know why I haven't gained weight, when I was in hung-gar it was so hard the training & I was suppose to get some arms at least, all I got is that I'm a Tall, Strong Skinny person. Yes, I play basketball also, I am not training since Feb2002. I would like to know what you guys recommend me to do? other than lifting weights.

Thanks

hey, dont feel bad because youre skinny. most people wish they were skinny like you. also you are so young that your body is probably still trying to grow taller. after its done doing that, then you will start to get thicker. its just nature, consider your genetics, also. who in your family is/was built the way you are? so you have to keep eating and just stay in shape, the rest will come later.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, grant it I haven't sen you, but if you are seriously wanting to gain weight, weight training is the way to go. Seek a professional trainer, they can give you recomendations to some weight gain formulas as well. Make sure when your eating that you are eating healthy and drinking lots of water, that will help a bit as well. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it, train to the level you want to be at, you will get there and in the mean time, most likely gain some muscle too.
Hung Gar is a good system and is quite hard as far as training, regardless of your system, train hard and long, you will see results.

Well, being skinny is not always good, although I am glad & I thank I went in Hung-Gar my health was even better than before, but I always had good defense system and good health. My health was so good before n while in hung-gar my doctor said he wished he had my health. I did went through hard times in hung-gar but it was for my own good, I thought hey I would get some bigger arms than what i have now. imagine, if im 6'2feet tall, and weigh 128-135lb i should say.
i dont want to put be fat, but at least i would like to weigh 140-145 , well yea thats what some people tell me that im still growing, well my father said he started to see weigh changes after he was a man, and he's 46yrs old, 5'11. he was 6'1ft.tall thats the tallest i can remember, he weighs about 160-165 he says. i think a tiny bit more. his weigh was before 170-175 1 year ago he told me, now he said he weighs 160-165. he dont look skinny n he's not skinny, he got good arm n wrist compare to me, i have little wrist, big fist, everything long lol, my cousin even called me BONEZ last year, he said i should use that nickname cuz it goes with me, i felt dissed. thank for ur comments

Maybe that is part of the problem, whatever training regiment you start, stay at it, work harder each day at it and you will see results.
At 16 you may not believe this, but if the girl doesn't want to date you or approach you because of the size of your arms, then she isn't worth dating anyway.

I used to be in the same position as you, no weight gain no matter what I did and I hated being "the skinny guy". When I hit 23 (I'm now 24) all of a sudden the weight came. I went from 68kg (140?) to 85kg (180?) within six months.
I hadn't changed what I was eating or how I was training, just the sideways growth spurt that started when the upwards one finished.

To gain weght: intake more calories than you need. If you need 2000 a day on average (you probably need a lot more) then it is not possible to gain weight unless you eat at least 2001 calories worth of food a day. I'm tall and skinny (not as much as you) and weight train so I have to eat LOTS of food. I would highly recomend a progresive wieght training routine as well as I doubt you want to get fat.(www.cyberpump.com used to have a huge amount of good info but I idon't think they are free anymore, PM/e-mail me if you want me to find others)

Thanks, but right now I don't wanna lift weights not even if that's the only way I'll gain weight. I rather do lots of pushups n exercise to get stronger that way. I wonder if a person has big arms/muscles because of the weights, does that means they are strong? for example. i read that there's 2 type of muscle, endurance n just those muscle u get from weights. bruce lee had endurance muscle, guess those really work.

you're only sixteen man...trust me, one day you'll be longing for the days when you didn't have to worry about what you eat.:D

you'll most likely fill out a little bit...if you do start with weights, do it smart. find a lifting program somewhere, or in the extreme case, go to a YMCA and see if you can get some personal training and diet advice. plus, to bulk, you'll need to eat anything and everything in sight with metabolism like that.

I doubt this'll make any difference, but all you have to do is to wait. At 16, I was pushing 6 feet and weighed around 130; at 21, around 6 feet and 141--my weight went up about 10 pounds every five years until it plateaud out around 185-195 in my forties.

Leave it alone. You're right on track--and we have no idea what the long-term effects of jacking around with diet/exercise/supplements to increase weight might be.

And oh yeah. The US, as I imagine you're seen in the news, now has a big problem with obese kids. Leave it alone. Lard will come all too soon, trust me.

When my younger brother was around 16, he had a massive growth spurt and ended up towering over me. Like you, he was extremely skinny. To put on weight, he went to the gym nearly everyday to lift weights and play basketball. Also, he watched his eating habits, eating a lot of protein-rich food after his workouts and exercise. After about a year of this, he put on a considerable amount of muscle.

Make sure you have a decent iron intake. You will never put on weight other than fat if you are slightly anaemic.

With the iron (preferably the good stuff) make sure your vitamin E intake is good, or you'll still get nowhere.

If your body cannot create the new blood vessels it needs to feed muscle it will not create that muscle.

Dude, i feel ur pain. I too was a tall skinny kid, and no matter what i did, couldn't gain weight - eating, weights, training....nothing worked. It's sad but true that ur body has a weight it wants to be, and will hover around that weight regardless of what u do....certain chemical efforts aside.

Then just like fringe_dweller, i just gained a bunch..about 12 kegs, or 27 pounds, in about 3 months. (i turned 27, and STOPPED training). Unfortunately it went on soft, rather than hard...:o

Dont worry about it too much. It'll happen. in the mean time, try rock climbing....tall skinny guys kick @ss at it - heaps of reach, less weight - u'll be the envy of every one there! Its also wicked training for strength.

Someone mentioned that you would fill out once you stopped shooting upward. This is definatly true.I gained a fair amount of size after I reaced my ultimate height (6').However, I was at about 165-170 lbs, and wanted more.If you really want to increase your size/strenght, weight lifting is the way to go. Don't go into the gym and pump for tons of reps on all the poser lifts. Hit the big movements hard - benches, squats, deadlifts, cleans, ect.and eat a lot of good food especially protein (meat, dairy,fish,ect.).Worked for me, I'm 210 now!:EG:

Talk to a dietician. It may cost some money, but they are quite beneficial in these situations. At 6'2" you should be eating close to 3000-3500 calories a day to gain weight. It sounds like a lot, but it will help.

Like everyone is saying, you are young and your body will eventually pack on the weight. If you want to gain though, you need to lift heavy weight (heavy for you), stay away from the intense cardio work i.e. basketball and running and eat a balanced diet. You should be working out 6 days a week if you want to see gains. There is no quick way to do it. You need to stay disciplined. Eat a lot of ice cream and peanuts. Be sure to lift though.

I have always been "skinny" "scrawny" "boney" a "peanut" "twiggy" etc.

From about age 10 it really bothered me and I never filled out, until I started training. I weighed 100 lbs when I got married at age 24. I weighed about 105 from age 25 to 28. I strated training in Kenpo and didn't change my diet much, and managed to gain another few pounds, to about 114. If I got sick, I would drop about 5-8 pounds in a single day, and work for weeks to put it back on!

I consulted with a dietician, and found out I needed 3000 calories a day to maintain weight, and 3400 to gain a pound a week. I started weightlifting reguarly. In the past year I have put on quite a bit, now I weigh 122 and it's all healthy weight, mostly muscle, some "other". Age definitely has something to do with it, I'm about to turn 34. But I attribute most of it to training.

High calorie snacks like ice cream, Ensure Plus pudding and drinks, Gatorade, and frequent helpings of meat and carbs. I take multivitamins daily with minerals (iron especially).

Now I feel better than ever- I just have to be sure to keep the weight but not keep packing on fat. Time to step up the cardio and the ab/butt work!

I know the aggravation you are going through, believe me. It gets better- especially if you try to go hi-cal and work toward muscle mass. Don't give up the b-ball, just add lifting. Instead of a candy bar, have an Ensure Plus pudding cup- in fact, have two.
Avoid caffeine and nicotine- both will keep your weight down, and the caffeine is dehydrating as well.

Last thing- get as much rest as you can. If you sleep best 9pm-5am, make your schedule fit that. If 11pm-7am, do that, religiously. This will let your body stay healthy. You don't need to tell me how much weight you drop when you get sick- I already know it.

Keep us posted! Jill

Bro, your not actually that skinny! Unfortuantly most tall people (Excluding NBA players before you say anything :p) tend to be kinda skinny......just the way it goes I guess. But seriously...your not actually that skinny. Only problem your gonna have following all this advice is the amount of Basketball you play. I play Basketball too and I went from 12 stone to 10 in 2 months (Not bothered to change measurements) so no matter how much you eat and stuff from my experiance it might be kinda hard to put that weight on :asian:

Good luck ps........What position do you play in Basketball? :D

I used to be very thin....then when I hit 35, my metabolism stopped! Now I have to train hard to lose weight!

I'm just doing pushups, and I fill up a lil tank of water & I pull it up like if it was weights lol... Will Pull ups help? sit ups? all kinds of exercise? so you sayin i should eat foods that have a lot of calories? so that means junk food ?you said to stay awy from Basketball/ Running ? why ? thanks. well I was seeing a chart of the future NCAA players being drafted, 6'1 = 175, 6'2=185lb. thats how I saw it.
I'm 6'2 & 142lb., I play basketball and need to play even more basketball, otherwise wont make it... I play any position they put me to play, I have played all the positions, Point Guard, Shooting, Small F, Power F, and Center... You are a true ectomorph probably.

What you have to do is eat. Eat plenty. At least 4000 calories of clean food such as complex carbs, monounsaturated fats, proteins from a variety of sources, get all your vitamins, but eat eat eat. Probably add weight training (bodybuilding style) and you should gain something.

But people with your body type, it's pretty hard to gain weight like that.

What's your LBM? BF%? A lot of NCAA players are around 10-15%, and in the pros, it's typically the same although there are a lot of people around 6-8%. Last time I remember, Shaq is a little over 20%.

What's your LBM? BF%? A lot of NCAA players are around 10-15%, and in the pros, it's typically the same although there are a lot of people around 6-8%. Last time I remember, Shaq is a little over 20%. I dont know my LBM or my BF,,,
Last time i heard Shaq was only 4% BF

I also need to depend on myself and not my parents, even though I get hungry a lot of time & I dont have any money to eat... I just weighed myself in boxers and I'm 142lb now :) ... I'm just doing pushups, and I fill up a lil tank of water & I pull it up like if it was weights lol... Will Pull ups help? sit ups? all kinds of exercise? so you sayin i should eat foods that have a lot of calories? so that means junk food ?you said to stay awy from Basketball/ Running ? why ? I play basketball thats my sport.

No problem with the help. People here like to pass on their knowledge. That's what is great about Martial Artists.

Keep playing basketball if that's your sport. If you want to gain weight though, you need to lay off the the cardio work. Some people may disagree with me. I guess you'll have to trust a stranger.

Continually eat!!! The better the food you eat, the better gains you'll see. Stay away from the junkfood. I know it's difficult, but if you wanna make changes you have to be willing to change aspects within your daily routine.

As for saving up money for a dojo, I would approach an instructor and tell him/her your level of desire to learn, but you don't have a lot of money. If they're worth it, they'll work out a deal with you. If they turn you away because you can't afford it, they are teaching for the wrong reasons. Show him/her that you want to be there. Volunteer to help out around the dojo to knock off tuition fees. It is important that you do what you say you are going to do in a case like this.

Look online for workouts by Navy SEALS and other Special Forces Teams. Their training is always intense and they don't use weights. You can purchase a pull-up bar at any sporting goods store for very little money. If you do pull-ups, push-ups and sit-ups everyday you're sure to see gains. Don't expect it to happen overnight. It will take you about 3 months before you notice the changes yourself. Within a few months, others will notice.

Listen to the people on the board. Enough of us want to help you. Keep us posted with your development.
