View Full Version : Martial arts founded by women?
Wertle 08-24-2002, 12:49 AM Aside from the Wing Chun legend, which I understand has been debunked, I can't say I know of any offhand. Does anyone know of any that exist? I know of many female leaders in the martial arts world, but I'm not sure of any arts created by women (then again, I've only barely nosed around ^_^). Input?
Bob Hubbard 08-24-2002, 02:03 AM Theres several theories on the origins of Wing Chun... I don't recall where I read about the different origins though...
Wertle 08-24-2002, 10:03 AM Yeah, I've heard of a bunch of different theories on Wing Chun, but I'm not knowledgable enough in any of them to make a call on my own.
RyuShiKan 08-24-2002, 11:05 AM If I am not mistaken there are several Chinese styles developed by women..........I think I read somewhere White Crane was or one of the vartions of Crane.
tunetigress 08-24-2002, 05:51 PM I know of one, called Tae Su Jutsu, the founder's screen name is Tae, and she has a group on MSN through which you could contact her for more information. Here's the link:
http://groups.msn.com/martialartsforeveryone/
I could invite her in to post about it if anyone was interested.
Wertle 08-24-2002, 07:10 PM That's interesting! Thanks for the link, I'll have to snoop around.
Nightingale 08-25-2002, 03:51 AM This is a quote from a friend of mine... I'm merely repeating it here for your amusement...
"No martial arts were founded by women, because if women were running things, we wouldn't NEED martial arts."
sweeper 08-28-2002, 01:39 AM well I don't know if it was the point nightingale was making but, why does it matter?
Nightingale 08-28-2002, 02:36 AM my point was that women tend to resort to conversation and verbal arguments rather than fistfights... however, with regards to "does it matter?" the answer would be no, it doesn't. Its just an interesting factoid.
KennethKu 08-28-2002, 03:40 AM Obviously, you are not from Chicago. LOL In this part of the country, women throw punches like men throw away empty beer cans.
BTW, legend has it that one Chiness MA (sorry I forgot if it was actually Shaolin or not) was founded by a woman. Could be just a myth repeated often enough and it becomes taken as fact.
Nightingale 08-28-2002, 09:01 AM LOL.

This story is often told about Wing Chun and I believe that it is indeed a myth.

Angus 10-03-2002, 06:45 PM What about Choy Lay Fut Gung Fu? I believe it was created by a woman as well.
Jay Bell 10-03-2002, 06:50 PM There are also legend of the Gyokko ryu Kosshijutsu. The concepts being developed in China by a woman, then brought to Japan. Of course...there's a lot of other versions as well ;)
