View Full Version : What's the popular art in your city?

In every city there is an art that everyone seems to practice or do a varient of. In my city you can't walk 20 feet with out bumping into someone who does Kenpo or some style of. I would say the second biggest style is Shorinji.
What about your city?

The most popular is American Karate. So Japanese or Korean art modernized for us Americans.
In the 80's it was Modern Arnis, it seemed like every art / school out there was also teaching Modern Arnis for the weapons.

i can't really say that i live in a "city" per say, kennett square just isn't that big. and for the most part, martial arts isn't very popular. i would say the biggest school there is a TKD/KravMaga school. most of the people there are people who want to try out KravMaga after seeing one of their ads, commercials, web advertisments, newspaper or magazine articles, the list goes on. Those Krav guys really know how to advertise and have mastered the business end of the art.
i'm close to wilmington, delaware however, where the arts are a little more popular. i can't really say who is the biggest there though. there is such a wide variety, i don't think there is one style that is bigger than the other. that sounds like a good thing to me.

It is NHb or NHb style jujutsu. Here it used to be kicboxing but when the head instructor at the most popular Kickboxing gym got the grappling bug most of the city's martial arts schools followed.

I was looking in the phone book and I'd have to say that here in New Orleans we have about the same number of Karate as Tae Kwon Do and that's quite a few.
I thought we didn't have any Kenpo schools here because I've looked before but now I find that we have 1 Kenpo Karate school. I'm surprised! Someday I'd like to go visit so I can finally go see what it LOOKS like!;)

Wow! I can't imagine Aikido being so common ANYWHERE!!! Most people have never even heard of it around here! I am blessed to have a good Aikido dojo but besides us, there is only one other in my city.

oh yeah, and phoenix, az has an awesome mix of various schools and styles.
Definitely TKD in San Antonio! They're all over! Not only do you
see one every few blocks, but every S.U.V. has a sticker of a
kicker, the name of the school on top, and the kid's name under
it! There's always the same icon with a soccer ball on the other
side. And I don't believe in stereotypes.
What's funny is .. a LOT of TKD schools use "Karate" signs to
advertise their schools.

Man, I WISH that was the case where I live. So many here teach
Arnia/Escrima/Kali as a side art. I can't find one here that teaches
it as it's main art. It'd a be a great cross training art.

In Victoria, we have the usual Karate schools and TKD schools and so forth, but almost all of them will include some sort of NHB style training. For NHB schools, there are only a few dedicated ones but for biggest range of people teaching one thing it is NHB. Also Kickboxing has always be huge here. I guess it comes from have a two time world champion in a relatively small town as well as canadian Champs, NA champs and K-1 USA champ Mike McDonald sometimes trains over here, although he is from Vancouver.
GouRonin,
Yeah we have a couple Aikido schools out here too. As well as a couple Judo clubs and a Bujinikan dojo.

In West Palm Bch, its TKD followed by various stlyes of Karate.
They mostly all use 'Karate' somewhere in the name/description
i.e 'TKD-Korean Karate' or 'Kenpo Karate'.

I don't live in a city, but in the greater Rochester area, it's definitely TKD. The next poplar is Isshin-Ryu karate. Most of both are McDojangs, though. Sad .... very sad. There is a few other styles around, but you have to really look to find them.
Where I lived in NJ, it was TSD and TKD. But there was several styles to choose from there. It was kinda cool to have so many choices :D But I took TSD.

I grew up in Buffalo and studied Isshin-ryu there in someone's basement. Great stuff. We would visit his colleague, with whom he came up in the ranks, at his McDojo on occassion. Lots of tournamnet sparring then.
My first tournament was in Rochester at RIT. Lots of Isshin-ryu there.
San Jose, where I used to live, had a great variety including lots of FMA.

Actually he's a 9th. He refuses to take a 10th on as it was the Old Man's thing. That makes him a "Master of the Arts" if you look at the ranks. He never, ever, in the time I have known him, claimed to be a GM. In fact, he just wears a black belt. In fact, the last time Renegade had him in he just wore an arnis uniform and no belt at all. (His Gi got lost on the plane) he was a 7th at the time of Parker's passing I believe. Then his 8th and 9th did not come by associations but the signitures of many different people all asking him to do so. Filing cabinets full. I believe Bill Wallace was the man who kicked him in to 9th.

Actually, I heard (read) the opposite of that.
Taken from www.ckfonline.org :
"After Parkers passing other associations were formed, one of
which Promoted Planas to Eighth degree in 1991 and in 1995
several associations joined together to promote him to 9th Black.
Though his expertise is mainly in Kenpo he has studied many
other arts including Judo, Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Shotokan, Silat and
the Filipino arts of his heritage being half Filipino."

Here in my neck of the woods in the Hampton Roads area of VA it seems to prevailiantly be TKD ( big surprise ) and Shorin Ryu.
One of the first schools around here was Shorin Ryu. Since then they have sprang up all over. We have other styles but not as many of their schools. Hap Ki Do, Shito Ryu, Aikido, Small circle Aikido, Krav Maga, Wing Chun, Hung Gar, A Black Dragon school, Hwa Rang Do a little north, Kali, Shotokan, and Kuk Sool Kwan here on base. No doupt a little more out there that I'm not aquainted with.

Dang, it's over there too, Arnis (Buffalo)? Sheesh. I live about 45 minutes from RIT. I have a friend who just graduated from there. She did Isshin-Ryu. Now she does the Navy LOL.
I guess Western NY is the hot spot for Isshin-Ryu.

To answer your question Gou, I think TKD is the most popular art on the Island. In my area(where I have lived for over 20 years), TKD has always been around to the best of my memory, but the other arts seem to come and go. There are still a few different karate styles out there (I believe Shito-Ryu and Wado-kyu are still around) but you don't see them advertised anywhere.
In the phone book there are a couple TKD schools, 1 Aikido and 1 karate(style not mentioned), plus the Kenpo dojo that I am currently training at.
There are a total of 3 dojos on the entire Island that teach Kenpo, which leads me to my own question.
Tmanifold,
seeing as though 1 of the 3 Kenpo dojos on the Island is located in Victoria, have/do you ever train at 'Professional Self-Defense'?
just curious.

With all due respect to Chiduce, Greensboro is interesting because there are as many Tae Kwon Do schools as there are
Japanese Go Ju Ryu schools. The instructors in the GoJuRyu schools however are mainly spread out amongst the recreational centers, yet are very pervasive.

I have heard that is a good school and that ralph chinnick is a good guy. Case in point though, Professional Self Defence teaches shootfighting under Bart Vales organization. I took Kenpo for a little while at a school in Langford but it was kind of shady. Learned alot though.
Actually victoria has a very electic blend of martial arts for such a small city. We have Capoiera, Ninjutsu, A couple of kung fu qwan(hung gar, if you can find it, Wing Tsun, Tai chi and a commercial blend) we used to have a FMA instructor by the name of fred shinahan but he may be in Vancouver now, kenpo, judo, jujutsu, some BJJ, aikido. Any way a good blend. If we only has a silat instructor I would be very happy.

The Dallas/ Ft Worth area is blessed with an ABUNDANCE of martial arts schools. TKD schools can be found in virtually every strip mall, while most every other art has a presence here as well. At last count we had eight American Kenpo schools. I know of three Brazilian Jujutsu schools. A couple of Hapkido schools, and a pretty staggering number of Kung Fu schools. Not to mention several Judo schools.
This area has always seemed to a martial arts melting pot, going back to the 60's.
I'd have to say Karate is the most popular MA in my corner of the city- Shotokan is the one that I always seem to notice. Might just be the old thing of everything being dumped in the "karate" category though. Hmmm.

We have three different schools in are town of Effingham. the pop is around 12,000. There is a ATA Tae Kwon do school, that is right across the street from me. Shudokan karate, which is what I study first. They teach out of the park district. They also got kick out of where I am now teaching. Then there is us. We teach a wide array of stuff. Main art is Kempojujutsu in that art itself we teach mainly self defense, kobudo weapons, Escrima, Grappling. I believe we have the biggest following with the TKD school are real close second, and shudokan has around 10-15 students.

here in PA it's the opposite. it is very hard to find different styles, and they are far and few to choose from.
Where in PA are you?

WOW! I had no idea that Victoria had that much variety of MA schools. I assumed that one would have to go to Vancouver to find arts like Capoiera etc. Unfortunately, Victoria is still a little too far for me to drive to class :( Hopefully by the time that I'm ready to expand my horizons, I will have a little more choice than what's available today...until then, Kenpo will do just fine. ;)
