I've noticed that when I carry a clip-on in a pants pocket I get a look from men who see it ... not sure exactly what they're thinking.

Curious if any of you men out there wanna fess up about what you're thinking when you see a woman who has a knife?

Honestly? I think; Good for her... hope she knows how to use it and that it doesn't get taken away from her while she uses it.

Although I am guilty of pant pocket "clipping" as well at times, but if it is your primary self-defense tool, you might want to carry it elsewhere. Criminals are becoming more and more attuned to recognizing tac folders in pockets like that. You may lose the element of surprise, and they may be fully prepared to make sure you can't pull that knife. I would consider in the purse (clipped so it is readily accessable i a single grab so you don't have to dig) directly in the pocket (with nothing else in the pocket so you don't have to dig, inside the waistband, or on your beltloop if it will stay.

There are other creative places as well...

To be honest it all depends.

I was in a geek place where people were playing war minatures, and computer games and also some card games.

A young women, which many there would have described as HOT, had a clip on in her pocket. While most of the guys there did not even notice or recgonize the knife, my thoughts were, good she is carrying a knife, but I hope she gets a better one soon. The piece she was carrying was one I recognized from a cheap magazine and or show as being a $5 knife. Sometimes these are ok, but I have had the most failures from the cheaper blades, mostly in locks, which have caused my injury, even if it is nothing more than a break of the skin.

Other times I have said to myself that is good, and I think it is an attraction for me, to know she has some similiar things of interest.

Once in a while I have seen the blade almost brandished and or flashed, which made me think "OH God", someone thinks they know something.

I would think one way or the other. However, it is a good thing, as long as she knows how to use it and isn't afraid to use it. The same can be said for men. To be honest I would probably think martial artist if I saw a woman with a kubotan on her key chain.

I carry a clip on knife (my new CRKT M16 edc) and a kubotan. :D

Oh, Paul - you know me by know and my preferred locations, doncha?

I actually rarely clip a knife into my pants pocket unless I'm using it in utility, like if we're working on a house or I'm doing outdoor work and I might need to cut something ... like I said, for utility use rather than hidden for self-defense.

depends on the woman. if she looks like the sort of woman who's wearing it as an accessory (goth chick, gang banger, ultrafeminist, for example) it's a 'sheesh. figures.' sort of look.

if she looks like a woman who carries because she's aware and probably trains, the thought is 'well done. good for you.' back in my single days, i might even check the ring finger while i was at it (among other things).

you might be asking in the wrong forum. guys here are going to have a far different perspective on women packing than the norm, i'd wager.

Ditto!

Regarding Tulisan's great point: I carry a tactical, but as a utility knife and not for self-defence and it IS clipped visibly in my front pocket. However, when I came close to a confrontation at a Starbuck's (NOT of my making, the guy was, I believe, on Meth.), I let it fall into my pocket so that it was not visible and could not easily be taken from me. My self-defence response would have been to throw my coffee at an attacker and RUN - not pull a knife.

Considering I'm yet another guy who finds it a bit sexy, I think this is true.

My fiance carries one when we're out camping, hiking or any thing else where she may use it as a utility knife. She even asked me to buy it for her. I tend to see a clip on in a womans pocket and wonder if she trains with it or if she's the outdoor type or what have you. Like someone else already said here though, if I can tell it's just for decoration to go with the outfit or to help carry off a negative attitude it doesn't have a good vibe for me.

I'm thinkin, "Is that a knife in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

I don't pack myself, so the only time I've had a blade clipped to my pocket has been for utility reasons. I've seen some strange looks, yes.

By the same token, I've also received some similarly strange looks when I've had hand tools or a sniffer stuffed in my pocket. Perhaps I don't look like a gal that knows how to get her hands dirty?

Was waiting for some other guy to say it's kinda hot. And now that one has, I think it's kinda hot myself. Also, it'd make me pay a little more attention to her so I could try to guess if she had any training or not.

I notice it for the sake of noticing it. I've always seen girls with knives, razor blades, and other stuff. It doesn't surprise me at all.

I used to carry a knife for protection, but nowadays, I prefer not to. I'm female and can't give you a perspective on what men think when they see this, but only what I think. And I guess I agree with Paul. Unless the knife is clearly for utility purposes, like a Swiss Army knife, my thought would be "that should be hidden." Same goes for a man who's carrying. A hidden knife is far more effective for self-defense than a revealed one. So if the purpose of carrying a knife is self-protection, why place it where it can be seen? Don't they make clip-on knives that can be tucked a little further down into the pocket so it's not so obvious that it's a knife?
As far as the hotness factor, never in a million years would I have thought any guy would find a clip-on knife sexy! But even with that added bonus, I'd hide mine, if I ever chose to carry a knife again.
All the best,
Rachel
