View Full Version : Kaith's Challenge!!!
GouRonin
07-22-2002, 05:03 PM
Recently Kaith made a challenge to his friends at his Kenpo school. He wanted to have them try out their gun techniques while he used a paintball gun on them.
Since no Kenpoists have agreed. I have taken him up on his offer.
I will do this at the JK Kenpo camp in NY State in August. There will be several senior Kenpoists there that will tech me said techniques and I will attempt to execute them while Kaith uses a live paintball gun. We will see what will happen.
My guess it this. I expect to get hit. However not to the point that I will be "killed" With the expert Kenpo seniors there I should have enough information on how to do these techs so that I will be able to defend myself. Kaith and I will then look at where I got hit, and how etc and see what the actual damage will have been. We will be wearing full helments etc as I hope to rip off my technique as realistically as possible as the gun is as close to realistic as possible.
Should be interesting.

Good for you Gou Im glad someone is going to try. This should be a great learning experience for all.
I spoke to Kaith about this myself. I agree it's a GREAT idea.
As a matter of fact, I hope someone can catch it on mpeg, so
we can post it here! (Anyone with a sony mavica could catch it).
The only thing that I have to say about it is this .. Kaith knows
the tech .. an advantage that a normal "shooter" more than
likely wouldn't have. So a trigger pull gets to happen at the
slightest movement.

Then why not have several shooters trained and untrained too see how much of a difference that makes. We can take a poll and see how many people would like to line up and shoot gou.

I've -read- the technique, but have not actually ever seen it done, even in practice, so there is some uncertainty on 'when' to fire. On the other hand, if you can evade someone who is expecting it, then when you gain the surprise you should have a better chance at success. IMHO. The folks at the camp who have spent years training are better qualified than my to evaluate that though. :)

Oh, my bad! I thought you'd practiced it before.
You didn't reply to my begging for an mpg of it. It'll be awesome
either way. If you splat gou in the face with paint, you could
probably sell a video of it. :D

I agreed to get shot by Kaith it's just that I can't get to him.
Anyways good luck Gou.
If nobody can get it to the net. Send the Video to me I will get it Internet Ready. I work at a Video Production Agency.

Sadly, until I can be compensated for my work and royalties paid, video will not be available to the general public. However, we will be making cassettes with taping copyright blocking on them available for a small fee to cover our time, expenses, and effort. get out your cheque books. This little little technique is a Kenpo technique called, "Checking The Wallet." Ha ha ha!

Good luck, GouRonin. It should certainly be an interesting experiment. I think this topic was brought up in another thread first and I agreed there that it was a good idea. Perhaps painful, but as someone else said, better to have it happen at a practice session than on the street where it counts. Definitely let us know how it goes.

One thing to keep in mind if -anyone- is trying this themselves.
Wear eye protection.
We will be clearing out a safe zone, and both wearing the proper safety equipment.
Its 1 thing to check your speed..its another to blow an eye out.
If we get pics / video I will try to get them up...no guarentees. :)

Hey Kaith,
If you can, find the paintball marker that's essentially a semiauto handgun size. It may make it more realistic than a larger marker.

Maybe this is a silly question, but can you borrow one from someone else then? I'm guessing if you have a paintball gun, you must play or at least used to play. That would mean you know others who also play(ed). One of them might have a smaller gun that you could borrow for the day for this test. No?

Sadly, I don't know anyone with a pistol. I've got a Tippman 98. Its about the size of an UZI. Since we're only trying the first part of the techniques (the evasion) it shouldnt be too bad.
I think. :)

Gou... I'm well impressed, man. Good to see someone putting their hoodad where their whatsit is.
Could someone describe the technique for me? I'm assuming its the "Broken Rod" tech Kaith mentioned in the thread this one grew from. I've never done any kempo, and have no idea what the technique is.
I'd also be intereste to know the format of the challenge...how far apart are the two players situated? facing eachother? etc etc.
I've seen some pretty wicked gun-in-the-backof-the-head disarms from taiwanese swat operators, but i've never seen a *convincing* face-to-face handgun disarm.
Hope it goes well.
Baoquan.
Bob Hubbard

Yup. Broken Rod.
Basically, we're not doing the entire thing...That whole I dont need a broken arm. :)
Just the initial 'get your ass out of the line of fire bit. I'll be using the gun 1 handed (T98 is a 2 hander) to simulate a pistol.
Basically, its a rear attack. Gunman presses a pistol into the back. Immediately you pivot clockwise on your left foot to get out of the lne of fire. There is a simutanous waiter tray block to the outside.
Paintballs are 68 cal. Because of the range, I expect Gou to wear some padding. Experiment stops when I've fired 1 round, or Gou gets his hands on the gun. (We're gonna omit the dislocated elbow, gun to my jaw, etc parts). :D
Baoquan
07-23-2002, 01:51 AM
Sweet.
I've been hit with a paintball point-blank. it hurts. a lot. Padding would be good :D
look foward to seeing how it goes.
Cheers

Holy cr@p this just keeps getting worse and worse. First the gun is now an UZI I have to avoid getting shot with and now I can't rip Kaith's arm out if I do avoid it???
Looks like I picked the wrong month to quit drinking...
Anyway, I have the added luck of having a few Kenpo seniors there to help me with the motion of the technique. We'll see what they give me for advice.

I have no experience with this sort of thing, so I'm just trying to get a general picture of how it would work. The defender is going to be turning into the gunman then, right? The accompanying block would have to follow the body rotation. So as the defender turns CW (to the right), he uses his right arm to block, pushing the gun off to his right. The combination of turning and pushing the gun away should result in any shot by the gunman going behind the defender's back then. Does that sound basically right? Like I said, I'm just trying to get the basic idea of it in my head so I kind of know what you two will be trying out.

I have spoken with Huk Planas who will be at the camp and has agreed to help me learn the technique properly as it was originally done and how it should be done. His participation was set with the warning that Kaith knows that I am going to do something.
This will make a big difference and I can see why. If someone is not prepared for something to happen, the chances that he will react with shooting are less than someone who is ready to shoot anyway. I assume the techs are not designed with the idea that the person holding the gun is going to actually shoot but more threaten to shoot? I am not sure.
So here is what it looks like. I have agreed to try the Kenpo Gun techniques with Kaith using a paintball gun. I will not break his arm. Poke his eyes out. Slap him in the skull, break his arm, or otherwise try to maim him.
This will be simply be to see how a paintball gun can be evaded using set Kenpo techniques. Although some of the said techniques might require that I stike Kaith in some manner. We'll try and pad him up so that I don't hurt him. As for me, we'll get some padding on me and the rest is up to me to try and not hurt too much. Proper safety equipment will be worn in respect to the gun such as helments and goggles etc. (I think Kaith has them)
Then we will analyze the data and see if I was dead or able to evade enough so that if I chose to I could have killed Kaith. Which is what we all know I would do even though I like him. (Don't pull a gun on me ya beeeyatch!)
As for video, we might get it after a few tries etc. I am unsure if I want this to get out for one reason. If you don't come to the camp you don't get to see it. Live is always better. However we will look at what footage we have and after a signifigant amount of time we will release approved portions of it. Sure this sounds like a cop out but I don't care. I'm the one getting shot at. I'm doing this to see what the results might be but also get people to come to the camp.

Kaith and Gou,
Remember, you should be able to crank the velocity of the marker down quite a ways so as not to risk hurting Gou too much. Most paintball fields require the markers to be set around 250 - 300fps. You probably won't be able to measure the speed at the camp, but Kaith can crank the velocity knob down a bit. This way, if the technique is tried and Gou is shot, you can determine whether or not to increase the muzzle velocity based on how painful the shot is or not.

What's the argument against starting with a squirt gun with colored water that'll easily show up on him, then working your way up? A point blank paintball gun will leave a heck of a bruise, and maybe more. What if he gets going partway and it fires into his open mouth or into his adam's apple?
I think that GouRonin has a good point about intent. Someone who intends to shoot you will presumably just do iot, unles it's aTV show. If he holds you at gunpoint, his intention is to not shoot you. For off-the-street kidnappings at least I believe it's over 90% likely that if you just walk away, they will not shoot.
That's right. If someone comes up to you, waves a gun, and says "Get in the car", using the self-defense technique of saying "No" and walking away will work 90+% of the time. I doubt that the Kenpo gun techniques will beat that average (even augmented by Systema)--no techniques would. They'd raise the level even further and could make things worse.
It's still an interesting experiemnt and I'm curious to see what happens, but there are lots of realism issues here.
Mind you, I have no objection to GouRonin being shot at.

I think it will be a very interesting experiment. I regret I won't be able to see it first hand this year. :(
One piece of advice, find some neck protections as well, a chest guard and helmet isn't going to protect the neck very much wouldn't want Gou to deflect anything and end up with a paint ball bouncing off his neck causing who knows what kind of injury.
Besides, I need him in good shape so I can do my best to beat up on him when our friend opens his school the following week.

This sounds fun. I have to admit I am curious about the techniques but can offer some things maybe....
1: full face helmets are good to use and provide protection. They are cheap and have only one flaw, should the paintball go under the helmet or in some cases under the visor it can damage the eye badly. seen it. Not good
2. at cranked velosity you will have more accurate shots and realistic hit time. Things change in both these areas when turned down but it does hurt. You will live. Brusiing is part of the game. No biggy. Clothing helps but it will still sting a bit.
3. I may have a pistol I could send that would be more realistic. I can check into getting it or if you would like I have used real 9mm with soft round training markers for more realistic senarios.
I really would like to see this video and ask to check egos and send some out. I am not kenpo person so I wouldn't be at the camp but.......
Hey I understand if this is the "secret stuff"
Have fun.

First of all. If anyone has any gun techs in their system, please e-mail them to Kaith and maybe we'll try them too.
Baoquan - We'll release some video of it in time. Don't worry. I just want to make sure I look good in it and my hair isn't messed up.
Arnisador - I agree with the psychological aspects you stated. Very well put. As for the squirt gun, well...it's just not as fun.
Dot - I can't believe you are not going to the camp. I shall lay beatings on you daily until at least January of 2003 now because of this.

Ahem, sorry kiddies, just finished watching K-19 and couldn't resist. At least my accent was better then Fords!
Since Kaith will definitely know a move is coming, he has an
advantage. So I suggest a walk ... 20ft, 30ft, whatever. Gou
walks this path with Kaith holding the pistol to his head (as the
tech prescribes, correct?) over and over again, and on his own
whim, he gets to defend. This kind of levels the playing ground
a bit, since Kaith won't know WHEN the tech is coming, only that
it WILL come. Whatcha think?
Dronak
07-24-2002, 12:13 PM
Not a bad idea, Kirk. It seems reasonable enough -- the guy with the gun in his back goes along and does what the gunman says, then when he thinks he can take the gunman by surprise with his disarming technique, he goes for it. I suppose they could try it both ways and see what happens.
The water gun idea would work, too, but I suspect it's not fast enough. Plus the fact that you can see the stream of water coming out of it gives the defender a visual on the line of fire. I don't know if that would be an advantage in this case, but you're certainly not going to be able to see and watch a real bullet coming out of a gun. The paintball gun is probably more realistic.
And just since others said it, I also agree that all appropriate safety precautions should be taken. I'm sure GouRonin and Kaith will do so. After all, it's an experiment to test techniques; we don't want anyone getting seriously injured in the process.

So I put down my whiskey and tonic and we discussed the idea of walking to simulate some sort of static environment. Maybe some distractions as well to keep kaith off his intent on firing. We know he's gonna shoot me, he was drooling about it today in fact, but we have at least agreed that he won't aim at the beer can in my hand.

If you're a high ranked blackbelt with a LOT! of time and experience behind you (IE you have truely earned that belt, not just been given it) you can make these techniques work. (Huk can move, thats all I can say...wow!)

"Chickened out?"
I see...
I work for a psychiatric facility in crisis management and sadly for me I was put on call the weekend of the camp with no way to get someone to work for me. I was very cheesed off to not be able to go to the camp. (In fact I owe a case of beer now because I couldn't go...GRRRR...)
To add to my misery my comuter went down. Now anyone who knows me knows I own the biggest piece of cr@p computer in existence. It's a 500 meg hard drive, 8 meg ram, pentium 60. A 33,600 modem. I have no floppy drives as they caught on fire once and I never replaced them. If I want to put anything on the drive I have to do it through my internet connection. The whole thing is duct and electrical taped into a mini-tower with no case that I found. The fact that I can even get it run at times stuns most people who work on computers. I have seen computer techs run in fear when faced with having to deal with it. Why don't I replace it? Well, it still works. Plus, that would mean that I would have less money to spend on beer.
Until yesterday I had no working browser as well and only could access one at work in a limited frame. So all I had was USENET to access and some time on another forum I belong to along with my public e-mail account. Sadly, I never wrote down my passwords and as I used my computer's memory function to automatically imput them for me I lost not only my information on my drive but also much of the services I use from cyberspace too. Hotmail, homepage, messengers etc. Since I could not access them they became useless. (Let this be a lesson to write stuff down)
So there I was. No e-mail save my private one that my wife and I use. I'm not going to be using that because it already has a spam filter working because of the IMAF and their inability to keep e-mail confidential and no browser to see what is going on here.
Also, as Rich had mentioned, my wife and I are trying to have a baby so yeah, I am a little busy at times.
I did however e-mail Huk and discussed with him several things that if he could, demonstrate to Kaith and company.
I come back here and Kaith is talking smack about me? Oh man...Oh man... Oh Lordy... Baby, you bring the @ss 'cause I'm gonna bring the whoopin'!
:cuss:
Anyhoo... I am back. I have a new e-mail addy. Until I get a new website done up I have a temp one.
So what the %$#@ did I miss?

Mr. Ronin, :D
I never came out and said what you said I said. I only said services, so you would know and not the world. I apologize if that caused you any grief.
As for you computer, I could help to update you. I have a case, a board, a AMD K6-166 with a couple of 8 meg chips, a CD drive, and an iffy floppy drive. I have no hard drive in it. IT also has built in sound, not sure if it works, and a 4 meg video card I believe. As, it is doing nothing for me, maybe we could talk about an upgrade for beer solution?
As for your description, I have seen those before, and yes I have run in fear. I offer this out of personal self gain, BEER shared with others. Now, since you are an expert at making these dinosaurs work, I only intend the trade no support. :D
Have a nice day.

You're right, you did not say that at all. No worries. I'm not upset at all. Just tired. Ha ha ha! At this point I'm thinking about just going to a local supermarket and asking a mother with a kid who's screaming if they want to give me their kid. From the looks on some of their faces I'm sure they might consider it. Ha ha ha! This solution might also let me get more training time in again. Heh...

I have a friend of mine working as we speak on getting me a new computer but I thank you for the offer. As it is, if you're back in the area you're always more than welcome to visit and have a few beers with me. You're ok. Cheers!
