View Full Version : Women's Self Defense Class
Kempojujutsu 06-21-2002, 12:17 AM I have had several people ask me about doing a women's self defense class. One of my mom's helps run a daycare and she has 21 women ready for class. He is a list of planned attacks we will work on.
Wrist grabs
lapel grab
bear hug-front
choke-front
shoulder grab-side & back
headlock
choke-rear
bear hug-rear
strangle hold
punch
mount
guard
My question here is this too much, or are there any other attacks you would show. I thought about having weapon attacks as a separate class or level.

arnisador 06-21-2002, 02:07 AM If it's one day only, it's too much; if it's over a number of classes, perhaps not.
I strongly believe that a short course in self-defense should spend at least 50% of the time discussing safety tips and strategies rather than techniques for defending against punches and grabs. Issues of not walking too close to buildings/cars where people could jump out, defending one's personal space verbally in personal relationships so a would-be attacker (remember ho wmany are known to the victim in advance) can't wear down one's defenses or begin to build a theory that the victim welcomed the attack, taking different routes home, ideas on how to hopefully talk an attacker out of the attack, etc., etc., etc.
Kempojujutsu 06-21-2002, 08:11 AM It's probably going to be 5 classes. One a week for 1hr or so. Was going to go over safety tips, things not to do, and possible improvised weapons women can use.
Bob :)

In that case I'd say it seems reasonable. I would add in a hair grab defense technique, or assertion that some other technique covers it (say, if many of your escapes were variations on grab a finger and break it, then you could say this would work there too).
And kudos to you for having the class! My wife doesn't want to
study m.a. I'm so worried about her and my daughter when I'm
not around. I'd beg, borrow, cheat, steal, or whatever to get her
into a class like this.
Kempojujutsu 06-21-2002, 05:31 PM The community that I live and teach in is rather small 15,000. The other night a woman was tackle and stab a couple of times, she we be alright. But when something like this happens everyone gets worried, and then decides to learn self defense. To bad they don't think their well-being is not that important untill something like this happens.

Kempojujutsu 06-25-2002, 12:27 AM I was making some notes on what to teach. I thought I might break it done and have different levels of training. Here's what I have down.

Bad idea. Unless you are stressing getting the hell out of there. I have been looking into these for a while now and everyone and their brother has a theory or claims to know what to do. The truth is that they are unpredictable and almost any advice you get will be wrong. I've been speaking with KP units in the police, private security handlers, and private sector trainers. There is no one way to deal with the attack. You'd be surprised at the crazy cr@p that people get told to do. There are some standards on how to deal with them but very very little.
arnisador 06-25-2002, 02:23 AM This has actually been on my mind as well--I started a new thread (http://www.martialtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2464) for it.
GouRonin 06-25-2002, 02:47 AM You just know every schmoe with a computer will be just itching to tell you how to defeat an attacking dog.
And about 1% of it will be right.

And worst of all, it won't be possible to tell which 1% that is.
It's something I've been thinking about and I want to see what ideas people toss out. Your post got to me actually do it.

You'll have to excuse me while I go pour a big glass of "shut-the-hell-up" for myself to drink.
arnisador 06-25-2002, 05:25 PM My brother-in-law is an animal control officer who specializes in dog fights, cock fights, etc., so this kind of discussion comes up often. His house is full of voodoo books (voodoo is bad for chickens).
Kempojujutsu 06-25-2002, 06:36 PM Okay, I'll take out the dog attack, What about the rest of the material I have down. Give me some Input.
Bob
arnisador 06-25-2002, 10:06 PM My understanding--and I hope someone will correct me if I am mistaken, as I say this all the time to people--is that if someone pulls a gun and insists you go with them (say, into a van), 90+% of the time they will not shoot if you don't go; but 90+% of the time, if you do go, you'll never be seen alive again.
DWright 06-28-2002, 12:59 AM Arnisador,
Your numbers are correct. A women that is abducted has a very slim chance of being found alive.
Years ago in a womens self defense class I was told that it was best not to resist because the bad guy would not hurt you if you didn't struggle.
Now it is taught that you make noise, kick, struggle, fight as if your life depends on it, because it does.
Kempojujutsu 07-10-2002, 10:43 PM Tonight was are first class. Only had 6 women, had around 21 said they would be there. I hope next week it picks up. Several of them had things going on.

About a third? No surprise, I'm afraid. Don't feel discouraged by that percentage.

hehe... promise her something she really wants to do but you hate, like a night at the theatre seeing phantom of the opera or something, if she goes... make a deal.
Kempojujutsu 07-19-2002, 01:04 AM Just keeping everyone updated on what is happening in class. We had 7 women show up. Started to work more realistic stuff. Put on the head gear and baseball shin guards. Most of the girls wanted to try it out, a couple didn't want anything to do with it. I didn't want to force them to try. Basically worked on wrist grabs and shoulder grabs from the front, side and behind. Also work a little against a choke from behind.

Eraser 07-20-2002, 04:43 PM hey all,
Kenpojujutsu, good call on not making the women (that didn't want to put on the head gear) wear it... just wait.. they will come around in time.. and if you have fun with it (even though self defence is a serious topic) I find that people learn better and more too!! I know I do!!!
now here's my 2 cents on the dog thing.... you have to remember... dogs (as well as all animals) are born with the natural instinct to protect themselves... SO unless you get Fluffy up there teaching a "how-to" class... there is no sure way to understand what they are going to do. (this is why I own cats hehehehehe :D )
Chow for now....
Kempojujutsu 07-20-2002, 07:59 PM The women weren't wearing the head gear, I was so didn't get the crap knockout of me. Couple of the women didn't want to do the realistic attacks. I believe they were more scared than any thing else.

Eraser 07-22-2002, 11:11 PM SOrry there... what you posted is what i meant.. but i think you caught on to that... :asian:
Thundering Hammer 11-05-2002, 10:24 AM How is the women's self defense class going? My instructor is considering it and I think it's a great idea. How many women (both karate students and people from the community) attend? Do they like the class and do they see the benefits? Thanks.
arnisador 08-02-2003, 02:14 PM How did this turn out? Have you been asked to do more?
Kempojujutsu 08-02-2003, 07:59 PM I did this last summer, It was to be a 8 week class. Toward the end the women cancelled on me several time and I had to once. It was getting close to the school year. All of the women came from a day care center. I may be starting a kids course there, may also try a women's course also.
