As some of you know, I've been teaching for a bit... but I've only had a "commercial" school (Storefront location) since October. Our school is moving along, but there's been a trend.. MOST of the new students I've aquired have been women. Both the adults and the kids. Infact, currently I've only got two boys in the kids classes and five girls.

It's cool. NO complaints... just wondering why it's leaning like that.

Probably my charm. :ultracool

It's a good sign. Several MA clubs, studios, what have you, that I've been to have very few women.

Generally, I think, women tend to stay in an environment where they are both supported and challenged. The studio where I train now has a high percentage of female students, and I think this reflects the general nature of the school - support in training, and also challenge.

So, good job.

IMO, I think it is probably due to the increased awareness/statistics of attacks on the street (which are primarily against women & children). Plus, it sounds like you have a "family friendly" environment which helps as well. Also, what Feisty said about women staying where they feel supported is true too. I've personally never attended a school where the women outnumber the men, so I think it's very cool :ultracool.

Good job, Sir--I wish you & your school well.

Salute,

Thank you for your kind words Gin-Gin. But please don't "Sir" me. John's respect enough. :asian:

I do think that the ammount of awareness of violence is on the up, especially in my area. In the last three years there have been some very heinous murders and a increasing gang population. NOW we've got the BTK serial murderer back after 30 years of laying off. The most prolific serial killer in American history to have NEVER been caught...still in our community.

This has peoples hairs up. I hope that the other good things that you were saying about my school are true too though. :)
Thanks

Sorry about that. It's not a good thing to have "trouble in the backyard", but to be able to offer training where females and children feel comfortable enough to learn and be challenged, that's a great thing!

My dojo, similar to many, are still male dominated. We are doing well now in retaining females though.

Keep up the good work!

Hey Brother John,

Don't discount personality. It counts for plenty in all aspects of life. It could posssibly be that these groups of people found something that they like in you and that others may be lacking. May they increase 100 fold.

Best of luck.

Good job, Brother John, you must be both charismatic and supportive to women. Also, one woman attracts more women going. The comfort in numbers thing. I hope you are emphasizing awareness and self-defense procedures. I know I was saved because I locked my car door when I got in right away. Leaving in two's etc. I hope they finally get that guy. But to attract the guys, just tell the women to bring in their husbands/boyfriends for a sample workout. That's all we have now is families, big families. Pros and cons on that one. Keep up the good work! TW

I'd tend to agree with TigerWoman. For most women, it's easier to be one of the females in the dojo, instead of the only female in the dojo. So the more you have, the more you'll attact, in general. This isn't specfic to dojo's, either. Any male dominated place is easier to approach if you've got sisters with you.

I'll have to agree with that. I'm usually the only woman on a mat full of large men and it can be a little intimidating. Then again, my instructor is wonderful. Very supportive of women and understanding. Since that's the way you appear in your posts (you know I'm a fan), why are you surprised? Especially when you have such little cuties in your school (see the pics in the Locker Room).

Awww....how sweet! :) It must be very rewarding to know that you've made such an impact on someone so young, Brother John. Kudos! :asian:

P.S. - Sorry to read about that BTK serial killer (how horrible! :jedi1: ); I hope they catch him soon so another poor soul won't suffer. Perhaps the only good thing to come out of that terrible situation is that people are beginning to take responsibility for protecting themselves, i.e., going to your school to learn Kenpo.

Brother John:

Not to devalue the importance of training all sectors of the population, but women are less likely to fend off an attack and less likely to fight back. That is changing now thanks to people like you. I'm glad to hear women take their personal defense a little more seriously than carrying a pair of sewing scissors or pepper spray. I'm also happy to hear that it's important to you and others like you.

Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you're here. :asian:
