This woman has guts. Not everyone would have the will to fight back. Especially being in this type of situation. But if its my life our yours, you'd better believe, that I'd be fighting the same way.

That's a great story with an all-around happy ending.

Even though she was victorious, I am sure it was still a traumatic event for her--she was still victimized in being forced to defend herself and to take a life, which might bother her.

You make a great point arnisandor. But I'm sure what would bother her most about being attacked was the simple fact that it happened in her own home. This is the place where we are supposed to feel most secure. But after reading this article and hearing many stories similar to this one, we can't let our guard down even when we're sleeping.

But again, much respect for any person who makes it out of this type of situation victorious.:asian:

It certainly turned out to be a better story than the alternative. I'm glad she had the presence of mind to fight with everything she could find. A lot of women give up, hoping that the attacker will get what he wants and then just leave.

A lot of people don't understand that self-defense starts long before the attacker get's in range. Everyone should take stories like these to heart and evaluate their home's safety, which includes fire safety as well. It might not have occurred at all if she had had some simple precautions in place. Even something as small as owning a dog would have done wonders.

And, although stories like this are highly publicised, they are not the norm. Far more women are raped by acquaintences and dates.

That is an outstanding ending to what could have turned out to be a horrific story. I certainly applaud "Mira" for having the prescense of mind to get a look at the face of the attacker before going for help. It is also gratifying to know that the self defense/martial arts that she had studied years before stuck with her enough to simply pop into her head in an almost instinctive manner.

With so much violence and sexual assualts going on in this world it's great to hear a story like that.:)

I say good for her! I agree that taking a life may give you consequences you have to live with, and it doesn't always matter if you were legally within your rights when you acted (ask any police officer or combat vet who has had to do so). The key word, in the previous sentence, however, is LIVE. As in you get to for another day.

An article like this should be a wakeup call for all of us -- women and men. As martial artists, we train in techniques to allow us to hopefully end a situation before it goes that far -- but if it comes down to it, we should be able to finish the job as well, and the type of art doesn't matter. I consider myself primarily a sport grappler/striker, and an all-around friendly and peacable guy, but I do know that if myself or my family were in imminent danger, I would have absolutely no hesitation choking someone to death or snapping their neck. I'm not at all trying to sound "tough", and what I just said may sound cruel, but it is really just practical. And to tell the truth, I may act cruelly in such a situation -- I may kill the guy when I could have gotten away with maiming him -- but as far as I'm concerned, the moment he attacked someone, he forfeited his rights as a human being. He also won't be around to incriminate me, so all the better. One less worthless punk to deal with. I'd worry about the emotional and legal ramifications later. Back when we were cavepeople the attitude was "kill or be killed" -- unfortunately, in some cases and places, it still is.

A former instructor of mine once summed it up this way -- 12 jurors vs. 6 pallbearers -- It's always better to have the odds in your favor.

Hopefully criminals start getting wind of these stories, and will think twice. I personally would love to thank this extremely brave lady (and others like her) for ridding our planet of someone who obviously didn't deserve to be here. In my eyes, what she went through was 1000x more stressful than trying to tap out a guy in the octagon. These are the stories we should be telling our daughters and sons.

I agree, no one really knows how they will react in a situation like that, I can only say that I take my hat off to her.

I believe that is a quote from Senior Grandmaster PArker as I have heard it on many occasions from my Instruct Master Rose.

"IT is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6" or words to that effect.

I agree that the woman definitely did the RIGHT thing to do. Way to go Mira!
Stories like that should be used to give a wake up call to the "prissy" women we've been reading about here, the ones that half-heartedly spar or don't fully get into their training. If this Mira had half-heartedly wrestled with her attacker the outcome would've been dramatically different.
Agreed that killing someone has consenquences all it's own. Many soldiers will tell you it's not the 25th or 50th enemy they kill, it's the first one that hits you the hardest. But I liked pknox's quote of 12 vs 6.
Our homes are indeed (as Lady Dragon stated) our places of safety (paraphrased), our refuge from the outside world so to speak. When it comes intruding/uninvited we should as human beings reserve the right to protect it and the lives within with everything we have. She was a single mom to boot. Well within her rights.
I send a silent prayer that she'll be comforted in the days ahead. Praised or not, this lady is gonna have a couple of hard nights sleep ahead of her.

She may have some residual side effects from such a traumatic event, but the bottom line is she had the instinct to survive, which you don't necessarily find in many people.
